PREVENTING DEMENTIA . Dementia is a broad description which includes many different symptoms, including memory loss, word-finding difficulties, impaired judgment, and problems with day-to-day activities, which are caused by injury or loss of brain cells (neurons).
• Risk factors for dementia include age, family history, heavy alcohol use, hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking.
• Causes of dementia are factors which lead to damage to neurons. Once the brain cells are injured, they lose their ability to communicate with other cells, leading to dysfunction.
Most of us start worrying about dementia after retirement -and that may be a little too late. Experts say that if you really want to ward off dementia, you need to start taking care of your brain in your 30s and 40s -or even earlier.
"More and more research is suggesting that lifestyle is very important to your brain's health," says Dr. Paul Nussbaum, a neuro-psychologist and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. "If you want to live a long, healthy life, then many of us need to start as early as we can."
So what can you do to beef up your brain -and possibly ward off dementia? Nussbaum, who recently gave a speech on the topic for the Winter Park (Fla.) Health Foundation, offers 20 tipsthat may help.
1 Join clubs or organizations that need volunteers. If you start volunteering now, you won't feel lost and unneeded after you retire.
2 Develop a hobby or two. Hobbies help you develop a robust brain because you're trying something new and complex.

3 Practice writingwith your non-dominant hand several minutes everyday. This will exercise the opposite side of your brain and fire up those neurons.

4 Take dancelessons. In a study of nearly 500 people, dancing was the only regular physical activity associated with a significant decrease in the incidence of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. The people who danced three or four times a week showed 76 percent less incidence of dementia than those who danced only once a week or not at all.
5 Need a hobby? Start gardening. Researchers in New Zealand found that, of 1,000 people, those who gardened regularly were less likely to suffer from dementia! Not only does gardening reduce stress, but gardeners use their brains to plan gardens; they use visual and spatial reasoning to lay out a garden.
6 Walking dailycan reduce the risk of dementia because cardiovascular health is important to maintain blood flow to the brain. Or... buy a pedometer and
walk 10,000 steps a day.
7 Read and write daily. Reading stimulates a wide variety of brain areas that process and store information. Likewise, writing (not copying) stimulates many areas of the brain as well.
8 Start knitting. Using both hands works both sides of your brain. And it's a stress reducer.
9 Learn a new language. Whether it's a foreign language or sign language, you are working your brain by making it go back and forth between one language and the other. A researcher in England found that being bilingual seemed to delay symptoms of Alzheimer's disease for four years. And some research suggests that the earlier a child learns sign language, the higher his IQ -and people with high IQs are less likely to have dementia. So start them early.

10 Play board gamessuch as Scrabble and Monopoly. Not only are you taxing your brain, you're socializing too. Playing solo games, such as solitaire or online computer brain games can be helpful, but Nussbaum prefers games that encourage you to socialize too.
11 Take classes throughout your lifetime. Learning produces structural and chemical changes in the brain, and education appears to help people live longer. Brain researchers have found that people with advanced degrees live longer -and if they do have Alzheimer's, it often becomes apparent only in the very later stages of the disease.
12 Listen to classical music.A growing volume of research suggests that music may hard wire the brain, building links between the two hemispheres. Any kind of music may work, but there's some research that shows positive effects for classical music, though researchers don't understand why.
13 Learn a musical instrument. It may be harder than it was when you were a kid, but you'll be developing a dormant part of your brain.
14 Travel. When you travel (whether it's to a distant vacation spot or on a different route across town), you're forcing your brain to navigate a new and complex environment. A study of London taxi drivers found experienced drivers had larger brains because they have to store lots of information about locations and how to navigate there.
Pray. Daily prayer appears to help your immune system. And people who attend a formal worship service regularly live longer and report happier, healthier lives.
16 Learn to meditate. It's important for your brain that you learn to shut out the stresses of everyday life.
17 Get enough sleep. Studies have shown a link between interrupted sleep and dementia.
18 Eat more foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids: Salmon, sardines, tuna, ocean trout, mackerel or herring, plus walnuts (which are higher in omega 3s than salmon) and flaxseed. Flaxseed oil, cod liver oil and walnut oil are good sources too.
19 Eat more fruits and vegetables.Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables mop up some of the damage caused by free radicals, one of the leading killers of brain cells.
20 Eat at least one meal a day with family and friends. You'll slow down, socialize, and research shows you'll eat healthier food than if you ate alone or on the go.

May we live righteously and wisely to be healthy, peaceful and happy.

Urticaria – also known as hives, weals, welts or nettle rash – is a raised, itchy rash that appears on the skin. It may appear on one part of the body or be spread across large areas.
The rash is usually very itchy and ranges in size from a few millimetres to the size of a hand.
Doctors may refer to urticaria as either:
• acute urticaria– if the rash clears completely within 6 weeks
• chronic urticaria –in rarer cases, where the rash persists or comes and goes for more than 6 weeks, often over many years
When to seek medical advice
Visit your GP if your symptoms don't go away within 48 hours.
You should also contact your GP if your symptoms are:
• severe
• causing distress
• disrupting daily activities
• occurring alongside other symptoms

What causes urticaria?
Urticaria occurs when a trigger causes high levels of histamine and other chemical messengers to be released in the skin. These substances cause the blood vessels in the affected area of skin to open up (often resulting in redness or pinkness) and become leaky. This extra fluid in the tissues causes swelling and itchiness.
Histamine is released for many reasons, including:
• an allergic reaction – such as a food allergy or a reaction to an insect bite or sting
• cold or heat exposure
• infection – such as a cold
• certain medications – such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or antibiotics

Certain triggers may also make the symptoms worse. These include:
• drinking alcohol or caffeine
• emotional stress
• warm temperature

Conventional treatment

Antihistamines
steroid tablets (oral corticosteroids)

Complications of urticaria
Angioedema
Angioedema is swelling in the deeper layers of a person's skin. It's often severe and is caused by a build-up of fluid. The symptoms of angioedemacan affect any part of the body, but usually affect the:
• eyes
• lips
• ge***als
• hands
• feet
Medication such as antihistamines and short courses of oral corticosteroids (tablets) can be used to relieve the swelling.
Emotional impact
Living with any long-term condition can be difficult. Chronic urticaria can have a considerable negative impact on a person's mood and quality of life. Living with itchy skin can be particularly upsetting.
One study found that chronic urticaria can have the same negative impact as heart disease. It also found that 1 in 7 people with chronic urticaria had some sort of psychological or emotional problem, such as:
• stress
• anxiety
• depression
Anaphylaxis
Urticaria can be one of the first symptoms of a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.
Other symptoms of anaphylaxis include:
• swollen eyes, lips, hands and feet
• feeling lightheaded or faint
• narrowing of the airways, which can cause wheezing and breathing difficulties
• abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting
• collapsing and becoming unconsciousness
Anaphylaxis should always be treated as a medical emergency

Homeopathic Treatment for Urticaria
Homeopathic medicines urticaria are very effective in treating it . Homeopathic mode of treatment heals skin diseases effectively, following a mild and safe approach. Homeopathic medicines follow a curative rather than a suppressive approach while treating urticaria. Homeopathy treats urticaria in two phases. In the first phase, the acute episode of urticaria is treated. In the second phase, Homeopathic medicines treat the chronic tendency towards urticaria. Homeopathic medicines for each case of urticaria are selected based on individual symptoms.

Asthma: Breathing Made Easy with Homeopathy and some self help!

As we all know that asthma by definition is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of the lungs.
Types of asthma are -
o Exercise-induced asthma
o Allergic asthma
o Occupational asthma
o Childhood asthma

Symptoms - The most common symptom is wheezing. This is a scratchy or whistling sound when you breathe. Other symptoms include:

* Shortness of breath
* Chest tightness or pain
* Chronic coughing
* Trouble sleeping due to coughing or wheezing
Homeopathic remedies for asthma are very effective and can cure asthma permanently. Homeopathic medicines are natural medicines and work by moderating our immune system which usually becomes over reactive in asthma. This homeopathic remedy is often asked for treating asthma in children.
One of the best ways to treat your asthma is with homoeopathy. The correct remedy can avert an acute crisis, while ongoing treatment will work to clear the condition completely.

Homeopathy should be the treatment of choice for asthma and other allergies. It is safe and effective for babies through to the elderly.
Self Help Tips
Lifestyle Matters
De-stress your life. Strong emotions can trigger asthma. Reduce your stress and anxiety by improving your relationships, making sure you take time to relax, and writing down your worries.
Exercise has mixed benefits for asthma. Exercise is important but while studies show it improves your ability to breathe in, they also show that it doesn’t reduce the number of wheezing episodes or improve your ability to exhale the air.
Vitamin D is essential for a healthy immune system which in turn reduces the frequency of asthma. Each time the sun shines on your skin, vitamin D is produced. Make sure you spend time outdoors each day with, where possible, at least your arms and legs exposed to the sun. Take care that you don’t burn.
The hygiene hypothesis. Children’s immune systems develop by fighting off viruses and bacteria. Keeping their environment super-clean interferes with this development, making them at greater risk of developing asthma. In other words, a little bit of dirt never hurt anyone.
The vaccine conundrum. Research shows that vaccines are strongly linked to asthma so it would be wise to carefully consider the true risks of epidemic and infectious diseases according to the country in which you live. Be aware that healthy development of the immune system depends on the body being exposed to childhood diseases. Homoeopathic immunisation can also be a safe option should you wish to avoid the risks associated with vaccines.

Food That Helps
Fresh fruit and vegetables improve asthma. Study after study shows that diets low in fruit and vegetables increase the risk and severity of asthma so remember; always eat at least seven serves of fresh fruit and vegetable a day.
Tomatoes contain large amounts of lycopene, an antioxidant that reduces asthma symptoms when eaten regularly. Lycopene is concentrated in sauces and cooked tomatoes with raw tomato providing smaller amounts.
Raw honey contains bee pollen and propolis, both of which have anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties – plus it improves immune system recovery. An open jar of raw honey placed under the nose of someone suffering an asthma attack can help them breathe more easily. As a preventative measure a teaspoon of raw honey can be either eaten or mixed in a glass of warm water and taken three times a day.
Garlic is a well known natural antibiotic. It contains a mixture of compounds that have antibacterial and antifungal effects. It also reduces lung inflammation that accompanies asthma. It was once thought that garlic had to be eaten raw to obtain these benefits, but it is now known that cooked garlic works just as well.
Ginger can break up the mucus that builds in the lungs and contributes to asthma – but it must be fresh. Make a ginger tea by combining two cups of boiling water with two tablespoons of shredded ginger Drink a cup of the tea once every two hours when asthma is a problem.
Turmeric, among other things, is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps asthma and eczema. For best results drink one teaspoon of turmeric mixed into juice three times a day on an empty stomach.
Peppermint can soothe the airways and break up mucous. Add a few drops into a bowl of steaming water and inhale. being careful not to burn yourself. Note: peppermint is a well known antidote of many homoeopathic remedies: avoid this tip if you are already using homoeopathy.
Caraway or fennel seeds can also break up mucous. Add caraway seeds to a bowl of hot water and use as a steam inhalation. Fennel seeds can be chewed or eaten raw.
Fish and fish oils rich in omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and improve allergies such as asthma, especially if the ratio to omega 6 fatty acids has been unbalanced by a diet heavy with foods such red meat, pork, dairy products and polyunsaturated oils.
Taking steps to reduce your exposure asthma triggers is a key part of asthma control, including:
1. Use your air conditioner
2. Decontaminate your decor
3. Maintain optimal humidity
4. Prevent mold spores
5. Reduce pet dander
6. Clean regularly
7. Cover your nose and mouth if it's cold out.

Can asthma be cured by yoga?
Dodge says that the sukasana pose is another relaxing pose for natural asthma relief. Just like savasana, its focus on breath and stress control makes it a great exercise to help asthma and lung function in particular. ... Let out your breath slowly and hold the pose for 5 minutes, with slow, even breathing.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long-lasting autoimmune disease characterized by patches of abnormal skin.

 Psoriasis is characterized by skin cells that multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. When these cells reach the surface and die, raised, red plaques covered with white scales form. Psoriasis begins as a small scaling papule. When multiple papules coalesce, they form scaling plaques. These plaques tend to occur in the scalp, elbows, and knees.
 Common psoriasis symptoms can include the following:
• Red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
• Small scaling spots
• Dry, cracked skin
• Itching, burning, or soreness
• Itchy plaques
• Small bleeding points when the scale is peeled away

Types of Psoriasis
 Plaque Psoriasis
 Scalp Psoriasis
 Guttate Psoriasis
 Nail Psoriasis
 Psoriatic Arthritis

Causes of Psoriasis
Currently, most experts conclude that environmental, genetic and immunologic factors interact to cause the disease.
The following are triggers that may set off one's psoriasis:
 Streptococcal (sore throat)
 Trauma to the skin(cut, scrape, bug bite, infection, sunburn)
 Certain drugs (lithium, high blood pressure and heart medications, beta blockers, antimalarial, indomethacin)
 HIV
 Stress
 Obesity

Psoriasis Diagnosing
 Psoriasis is often diagnosed or at least suspected on the basis of its appearance and distribution. However, psoriasis may resemble eczema or other skin diseases and further tests may be required i.e., biopsy
Conventional treatment
• Topical Medications
• Phototherapy - which can lead to skin cancer.
• Laser Therapy
• Oral Medications
• Biologics – are protien injections which are very expensive

Homoeopathic treatment
• Individual approach
• No Side effects
• Safe
• Natural
• Reliable
• Complete solution with overall development as its an autoimmune disorder.

We can treat the person as a whole and try to find a constitutional remedy with the aim of strengthening the organ¬ism generally. This means looking at not only the patient’s psoriasis symptoms, but also his or her general health and way of reacting to the environment, as well as what drives him or her on an emotional level. In choosing which homeopathic remedy to use, we consider various factors. It can be extremely helpful to know if something might have triggered the onset of symptoms. If the psoriasis has been triggered by bereavement, for instance, this might guide us to particular remedies, although a variety of other factors or symptoms need to be present too to give such a remedy. It is also important for a homeopathic practitioner to understand what was the exact reaction to such an event, as everyone has their own particular way of experiencing and dealing with such traumas. The location of the patches can be useful for the choice of medicine. Factors that aggravate or ameliorate a sufferer’s condition are important to know, especially if they are atypical for the condition, as this indicates an indi¬vidual mode of expression particular to the affected person.

Acne
Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin
What causes acne?
 Acne appears when a pore in our skin clogs. This clog begins with dead skin cells. Normally, dead skin cells rise to surface of the pore, and the body sheds the cells. When the body starts to make lots of sebum (see-bum), oil that keeps our skin from drying out, the dead skin cells can stick together inside the pore. Instead of rising to the surface, the cells become trapped inside the pore.
 Sometimes bacteria that live on our skin, p. acnes, also get inside the clogged pore. Inside the pore, the bacteria have a perfect environment for multiplying very quickly. With loads of bacteria inside, the pore becomes inflamed (red and swollen). If the inflammation goes deep into the skin, an acne cyst or nodule appears.
Types of acne
 Blackheads.
 Whiteheads.
 Papules.
 Pustules (what many
people call pimples).
 Cysts.
 Nodules.

Acne can appear on the back, chest, neck, shoulders, upper arms and buttocks
Acne symptoms
 Low self-esteem
 Depression
 Dark spots on the skin
 Scars (permanent)

Acne: Diagnosis
 Grade the acne. Grade 1 is mild acne. Grade 4 is severe acne.
 Note what type, or types, of acne appear on your skin.

Acne: Treatment
 Topical applications with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid
 Internal medication: Antibiotics, Birth control pills and other medicine that works on hormones, Isotretinoin
 Procedures : laser, chemical peels, acne removal

Global Warming. Not just the Bangalore, but temperature is rising all over the world, so Bangalore is not the exception. Other reason includes - Increase in population -> Increase in vehicles, houses, offices, clubs, restaurants, malls, hospitals, mobile towers, schools, colleges and many other things, which all uses large generator sets running on diesel. Gone was the time when Bangalore was called as Garden city of India (few exceptions) and pensioner's paradise, as increase in population has put enough load on the city. Let us know about heat stroke which is increasing in Bangalore.
Heatstroke// Sunstroke

Definition:
Heat stroke, also known as sun stroke, is a type of severe heat illness that results in a body temperature greater than 40.0 °C (104.0 °F) and confusion.

Symptoms: High body temperature, red, dry or damp skin, headache, dizziness, confusion.

Complications: Seizures, rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure.

Types: Classic - most often in elderly and infirm individuals in summer situations with insufficient ventilation.
Exertional - can happen in young people without health problems or medications – most often in athletes, outdoor laborers, or military personnel engaged in strenuous hot-weather activity or in certified first responders wearing heavy personal protective equipment.

Causes: High external temperatures, physical exertion

Risk factors: Extremes of age, heat waves, high humidity, certain drugs, heart disease, skin disorders

Treatment: Rapid cooling, supportive care

Prognosis: Risk of death 600/year

Young children, elderly adults, or disabled individuals left alone in a vehicle are at particular risk of succumbing to heat stroke. "Heat stroke in children and in the elderly can occur within minutes, even if a car window is opened slightly.
Pets are even more susceptible than humans to heat stroke in cars, as dogs (the animals usually involved), cats, and many other animals cannot produce whole-body sweat to cool themselves. Leaving the pet at home with plenty of water on hot days is recommended instead, or, if a dog must be brought along, it can be tied up outside the destination and provided with a full water bowl.
The risk of heat stroke can be reduced by observing precautions to avoid overheating and dehydration. Light, loose-fitting clothes will allow perspiration to evaporate and cool the body. Wide-brimmed hats in light colors help prevent the sun from warming the head and neck. Vents on a hat will help cool the head, as will sweatbands wetted with cool water. Strenuous exercise should be avoided during daylight hours in hot weather, as should remaining in confined spaces (such as automobiles) without air-conditioning or adequate ventilation.
In hot weather, people need to drink plenty of cool liquids to replace fluids lost from sweating. Thirst is not a reliable sign that a person needs fluids. A better indicator is the color of urine. A dark yellow color may indicate dehydration.

Treatment:
Treatment of heat stroke involves rapid mechanical cooling along with standard resuscitation measures.
Immersing a person into a tub of cold water (immersion method) is a widely recognized method of cooling.
Hydration is important in cooling the person. In mild cases of concomitant dehydration, this can be achieved by drinking water, or commercial isotonic sports drinks may be used as a substitute. In exercise- or heat-induced dehydration, electrolyte imbalance can result, and can be worsened by excess consumption of water. Hyponatremia can be corrected by intake of hypertonic fluids. Absorption is rapid and complete in most people but if the person is confused, unconscious, or unable to tolerate oral fluid, then an intravenous drip may be necessary for rehydration and electrolyte replacement.

Homeopathic treatment for sunstroke is helpful for people who tend to get frequent episodes. In such cases, a detailed case taking and case analysis helps in the selection of the most suitable homeopathic medicine. Homeopathic medicines reduce the intensity as well as the frequency of episodes. They are safe for all the age groups, have no side-effects, and are prepared using natural substances.

CANCER AWARENESS # WORLD CANCER DAY 4th

Cancer is when abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way. Some cancers may eventually spread into other tissues.
There are more than 200 different types of cancer.

A primary tumour is the name for where a cancer starts.
Cancer can sometimes spread to other parts of the body – this is called a secondary tumour or a metastasis.

Cancer and its treatments can affect body systems, such as the blood circulation, lymphatic and immune systems, and the hormone system.
Most cancers start due to gene changes that happen over a person’s lifetime.
More rarely cancers start due to inherited faulty genes passed down in families.
There are 5 main cancer groups
Cancers are divided into groups according to the type of cell they start from. They include
* Carcinomas
* Lymphomas
* Leukaemias
* Brain tumours
* Sarcomas
Stages and grading of cancer
Staging and grading give an idea of how quickly a cancer may grow and which treatments may work best
The stage of a cancer means how big it is and whether it has spread.
Grading looks at how abnormal the cancer cells are.

Homeopathy for Cancer:
Homeopathy treats the person as a whole. It means that homeopathic treatment focuses on the patient as a person, as well as his pathological condition. The homeopathic remedies for cancer are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency (predisposition/susceptibility) is also often taken into account for the treatment of chronic conditions.

Homeopathic cancer treatment has great promise, given the exceptional safety of the treatment and the relatively frequent observation of beneficial clinical effects.
Homeopathic treatment of cancer is so effective that this fact can no longer be hidden from the public. More and more patients around the world are choosing homeopathic treatment, either complementary, or as an alternative, to conventional therapy.
In India, where homeopathy is a medical therapy sanctioned by the government, clinics report thousands of cancer patients are regularly being treated with homeopathy, and around one fifth are reported to have complete recession of tumors and other improvements under homeopathic treatment.

Homeopathy for people with cancer is promoted as a natural way to also help:
* relax
* cope with stress, anxiety and depression
* control symptoms and side effects such as pain, sickness and weakness.
