🤰🩺 Diabetes in Pregnancy: GDM vs Pregestational Diabetes

Understanding the difference can prevent complications & save lives 💡

🔷 1. What’s the Difference?
🟢 Gestational Diabetes (GDM)

✔ Diagnosed during pregnancy
✔ Due to pregnancy-induced insulin resistance
✔ Managed with:

🥗 Diet (A1GDM)
💉 Insulin/medication (A2GDM)
🔴 Pregestational Diabetes

✔ Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes BEFORE pregnancy
✔ Higher risk of:

⚠️ Maternal complications
⚠️ Congenital abnormalities

📊 2. Epidemiology
🟢 GDM → 5–9% of pregnancies
🔴 Pregestational → ~1% of pregnancies
GDM usually appears in 2nd–3rd trimester

⚙️ 3. What Happens in the Body?
🤍 1st trimester → ↑ insulin sensitivity → hypoglycemia risk
🔥 Later pregnancy → hormones → insulin resistance
➡️ Leads to high blood sugar (especially after meals)

🚨 4. Risk Factors (GDM)
Family history of diabetes 🧬
Previous GDM 🤰
Previous large baby (>4 kg) 👶
Recurrent pregnancy loss

🧪 5. Clinical Features

⚠️ Often silent

Watch for:

📈 Large baby (LGA)
💧 Polyhydramnios
Mild edema

🔍 6. Screening & Diagnosis
🗓️ Screen ALL at 24–28 weeks
⚡ High-risk → screen in 1st trimester
Monitor for complications throughout pregnancy

💊 7. Management

🎯 Goal: Tight glucose control

✔ Healthy diet & physical activity 🥗🏃‍♀️
✔ Insulin if needed 💉
✔ Regular fetal monitoring 👶

📦 Delivery Planning
Early delivery if complications ⚠️
C-section if baby > 4500 g
Strict glucose control during labor

⚠️ 8. Complications
👩 Maternal
Hypertension
UTIs
Difficult delivery
👶 Fetal
Congenital anomalies
Macrosomia
Neonatal complications

🔮 9. Prognosis

✔ GDM usually resolves after delivery
❗ BUT:

~50% risk of Type 2 diabetes later
~50% recurrence in future pregnancies
📅 Follow-Up
Screen at 4–12 weeks postpartum
Repeat every 1–3 years

💡 Key points

👉 Early screening + tight control = healthy mother & baby

(Disclaimer):

A Caesarean birth (C-section) is a safe and commonly performed surgical method used to deliver a baby when vaginal delivery may pose risks to the mother or child.

This visual explains how the procedure is carried out step by step. A carefully placed incision is made in the lower abdomen, followed by gentle separation of the underlying layers to access the uterus. Once the uterus is opened, the baby is guided out with care, supported by a skilled medical team.

While the idea of surgery can feel overwhelming, C-sections are routine procedures performed worldwide with a strong focus on safety and precision. Some are scheduled ahead of time due to medical needs, while others happen unexpectedly if complications arise during labour.

Healing after a C-section takes time and patience. With proper care, rest, and emotional support, many mothers recover smoothly. Every recovery journey looks different, and it’s important to honor your body as it heals.

No matter how a baby enters the world, the strength it takes to bring life into existence is extraordinary. A C-section is not a lesser birth—it is simply another path to meeting your baby.

Learning about different birth options can empower families, ease anxiety, and help create a more prepared and confident birth experience.
