“You are a beginner. I will teach you from surya namaskara.” - Sharath asked me to come to his afternoon class at 3pm, a class which was likely meant for beginner and mostly locals who couldn’t make it / were unqualified for his morning class. We were just a handful of students in the 3pm batch. I was disappointed that I wasn’t to attend his morning class; that was THE class to attend. However, I received direct instruction from him from the Ekam Inhale of SuryaNamaskar A. He would always make me stay for what seemed like an eternity in Uthpluthihi before allowing me to move on and close. This was November 2014. In about a month or so, he asked me to attend the morning class and I was relieved to have been relieved from probation. His morning class was everything everyone has said and heard and more. For me, it still is the afternoon class (3pm), my initiation to Ashtanga, that I cherish the most.
It didn’t matter to him that I had practiced yoga for years. And after practicing for two months in the corner house at KPJAYI, it didn’t matter to me even that I had practiced yoga for years prior. This was the yogasana that I was looking for, and this was the re-start I was meant to have. I owe it to Sharath for teaching me this invaluable lesson that yogasana itself is extremely vast and we should treat ourselves as beginners and be open and humble to learn from everywhere.
It is an irreplaceable loss to not be able to practice under his watch. I can’t even come to imagine what thousands of his students are going through right now. It is time to get back to practice, and wait, and practice, and wait, for one last “one more” call…

Our judgements (and hence, prejudices) come from our likes and dislikes. When we practice examining our likes and dislikes for what they are, our judgements lose their hold on our minds. We feel ease and freedom to that extent that we loosen our prejudices. It is upto each individual to put in the work.
