The theme for World Diabetes Day 2021-23 is "Access to Diabetes Care".

"Education to protect tomorrow" is the theme of the second year of the World Diabetes Day 2021-23 campaign. Activities will focus on highlighting the need for better access to quality diabetes education for health professionals and people living with diabetes.

537 million adults (1 in 10) were living with diabetes in 2021. This number is expected rise to 643 million by 2030 and 783 million by 2045.

Diabetes caused 6.7 million deaths in 2021.

Diabetes was responsible for at least $966 billion in health expenditure in 2021 – 9% of the global total spent on healthcare.

1 in 6 live births (21 million) are affected by high blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) in pregnancy.

One of the significant risk factors for type 2 diabetes, cigarette smoking. According to the Surgeon General’s Report, there are several ways in which smoking may increase a person’s risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

The chemicals in ci******es cause harm to your body’s cells and can interfere with their normal function. This can cause inflammation throughout the body, which may decrease the effectiveness of insulin. Additionally, when chemicals from cigarette smoke meet oxygen in the body, this process can also cause cell damage, called oxidative stress. Both oxidative stress and inflammation may be related to an increased risk of diabetes.

Smokers are 30 to 40 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than nonsmokers. Smoking can also make managing the disease and regulating insulin levels more difficult because high levels of ni****ne can lessen the effectiveness of insulin, causing smokers to need more insulin to regulate blood sugar levels.

Diabetes can be a difficult disease to manage, with poor diet only exacerbating that difficulty. In fact, a healthy diet is necessary to keep blood glucose levels within an optimal range, which is a critical requirement for people with diabetes. Nutrition is certainly closely related to health because as the saying goes, you are what you eat. This doesn’t mean that you will suddenly become a long, pink, cylindrical object immediately after consuming a hot dog. However, over time, your diet can greatly affect your health in many different ways. American Diabetes Association (ADA) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) emphasising on Nutrition Therapies and regular exercise in ameliorating the diabetes symptoms and reducing the micro and macro vascular complications.
