Tooth Discolouration….
Tooth discolouration means teeth look yellow, brown, grey, or have spots instead of their natural white. It’s common, especially in teens, and there are several possible causes.
Common types & causes
1. External (surface stains)
• Food & drinks: tea, coffee, cola, berries
• Poor brushing or plaque buildup
• Smoking or va**ng (if applicable)
These stains sit on the enamel and are usually the easiest to remove.
2. Internal (inside the tooth)
• Tooth injury (can turn a tooth grey or dark)
• Certain medications taken when teeth were developing (early childhood)
• Excess fluoride when younger (can cause white or brown patches)
• Enamel defects from genetics or illness
3. Age-related
• Enamel thins over time, showing more of the yellow dentin underneath (more common later in life, but can start mildly in teens).
What helps
• Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
• Floss daily (stains often collect between teeth)
• Regular dental cleanings
• Limit staining foods/drinks or rinse with water after them
Treatments (dentist-guided)
• Professional cleaning (for surface stains)
• Whitening treatments (only with dental advice for teens)
• Bonding or veneers (for specific internal stains or defects)
When to see a dentist
• One tooth suddenly turns dark or grey
• Discolouration doesn’t improve with good brushing
• White or brown patches that appeared early in life
• Tooth pain along with colour change
If you want, you can tell me:
• What color the discolouration is
• Whether it’s on one tooth or many
• If there’s pain or a past injury
I can then give more specific guidance 🙂
