34 YEARS YOUNG MALE PRESENTED WITH COMPLAINT OF HEADACHE FOR LAST 6-8 MONTHS. HE CONSULTED LOCAL DOCTORS AND UNDERWENT MRI BRAIN BEFORE 6 MONTHS. HE WAS FOUND TO HAVE A BRAIN TUMOR AT SKULL BASE (ARISING FROM THE BASE OF LARGE BRAIN) PROJECTING INSIDE THE BRAIN ON RIGHT SIDE.
HE CONSULTED A FEW NEUROLOGISTS AND GOT ADVISED TO UNDERGO BRAIN SURGERY FOR REMOVAL OF BRAIN TUMOR. DUE TO ITS CRITICAL LOCATION, NATURE OF SURGERY WAS HIGHLY COMPLICATED AND CHALLANGING FOR ANY NEUROSURGERON. HE GOT SCARED OF SURGERY AND DID NOT INFORM ABOUT THE NEED OF SUGERY TO FAMILY MEMBERS. AFTER FEW MONTHS HIS SYMPTOMS WORSENED AND HE STARTED GETTING SEVERE HEADACHE.
HE UNDERWENT MRI BRAIN AGAIN AFTER FEW MONTHS AND NOTED THAT THE TUMOR WAS GETTING LARGER IN SIZE COMPARED TO PREVIOSLY DONE MRI. THE TUMOR WAS AROUND 6 CM x 5 CM IN SIZE. HE AGAIN MET MULTIPLE NEUROSURGEONS.
FINALLY, HE CONSULTED DR MAULIK VAJA AT STERLING HOSPITAL AND DECIDED TO GET OPERATED BY DR VAJA. HE WAS OPERATED FOR BRAIN TUMOR SUGERY AT STERLING HOSPITAL, RCR ON 07/06/2025. THE SURGERY LASTED FOR 8 HOURS AND THE TUMOR WAS COMPLETELY REMOVED BY DR MAULIK VAJA. AFTER SURGERY HE WAS OBSERVED IN ICU FOR 3-4 DAYS AND DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL IN 8 DAYS. AFTER ONE MONTH OF RECOVERY PERIOD, HE STARTED HIS PROFESSIONAL DUTIES. MRI OF BRAIN WAS DONE AFTER 3 MONTHS OF SURGERY AND IT SHOWED NO EVIDENCE OF ANY RESIDUAL TUMOR WHICH CONFIRMED THAT THE TUMOR WAS COMPLETELY REMOVED. PRESENTLY HE IS LIVING A NORMAL AND HEALTHY LIFE.
SKULL BASE TUMORS ARE VERY COMPLICATED IN NATURE BECAUSE OF MANY REASONS. EVEN TUMORS, AS SMALL AS 2-3 CM, ARE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE FROM SKULL BASE DUE TO THEIR COMPLEX LOCATION. SKULL BASE IS DIFFICULT TO ACCESS AND NERUOSURGEONS REQUIRE SPECIAL TRAININGN TO PERFORM THESE SURGERIES. APART FROM DIFFICULT ACCESS, VITAL NEUROVASCULAR STRUCTURES LIKE BLOOD VESSELS, SMALL BRAIN (BRAIN STEM) AND IMPORTANT NERVES ARE SITUATED IN THIS AREA. MINOR OF THE DAMAGE TO THIS STRUCTURE RESULTS IN MAJOR NEUROLOGICAL COMPLICATIONS LIKE PARALYSIS AND BEDRIDDEN SITUATION AND IN MANY CASES DEATH OF THE PATIENT IS ALSO VERY COMMON.
WE, AT STERLING HOSPITAL, HAVE BEEN OPERATING SUCH COMPLICATED NEUROSURGICAL CASES REGULARLY SINCE MANY YEARS. WE ARE GRATEFUL TO OUR PATIETNS WHO HAVE SHOWN COMPLETE FAITH IN US FOR THEIR TREATMENT.

On this "world head injury awareness day" sharing story of recovery of a young male patient form severe brain injury after road accident managed under my care at sterling hospital, Vadodara, Gujarat.

Key messages for community about treatment of brain injury:
1) The treatment of brain injury starts at site of accident.
2) Patient must report to neurosurgeon in case of brain injury.
3) Treatment should be always in the setup where neurosurgeons are available on toes and round the clock.
4) Delay in shifting patient under neurosurgeon always reduces chances of recovery.
5) Every minute is important after brain injury and no time must be wasted in taking decision for treatment of brain injury under qualified neurosurgeon.
6) Brain injury is irreversible if not treated/operated timely.

WONDER OF "MINIMAL INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY":
39 YEAR LADY presented in consultation room with long standing lower back pain increased to severe lower back pain for few days with sciatica pain in left lower limb associated with tingling and numbness in left feet. She was not able to stand or walk few steps due to pain. She tried with bed rest for few days but not getting relief from problem.

She was investigated with MRI spine and advised for spine surgery. Listening to spine surgery she had lots of misbelief about surgery.

Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery is advanced technique by which patient recovers faster then surgery done with conventional methods. She recovered from pain and surgery with in just 4-5 days and resumed work within 10 days of surgery. With further treatment like physiotherapy she is back to routine life after spine surgery.

Story of 48 years old lady detected with brain tumor.

One morning she was brought to our emergency room, with having met with road accident. She skidded and fell down from two-wheeler. With further detail she elaborated that she was feeling dull for last 3-4 days with excessive sleep (drowsiness) and tiredness with breathing difficulty but did not gave importance to these symptoms. She had mild headache for few days which recently increased. She confirmed that she suddenly developed blackout while she was riding two-wheeler and don’t remember how she fell down.

On getting done brain investigation, she was found to have a lesion called Colloid cyst which was obstructing brain water (CSF) circulation and increased brain pressure.
She and her husband were explained for need for brain surgery as it was not a regular head injury but brain tumor caused all the events. Family members were extremely worried and afraid listening this advice, but she (patient) was fearless and confident on our team.
Finally, she was operated and discharged from hospitals in 10 days. She recovered completely over 6-8 weeks without any physical or cognitive impairment. MRI after 2 months of surgery showed complete removal of lesion without any residual pressure in brain.

Moral: Never underestimate symptoms of brain problem. Never do risky activities like driving, swimming or sport adventure when having such symptoms. Consult nearest neurologist/ neurosurgeon when such symptoms without any delay. Brain tumor surgeries are challenging but not impossible or risky with expert hands. On the other hand the disease like brain tumor becomes very dangerous when it is undetected or untreated.

World Head Injury Awareness day

Prevention of brain injury is the most important goal for the nation. Everyone must follow traffic rules. In case of head injury, reach the tertiary care centre as soon as possible, and consult Neurosurgeon. It reduces the impact of Brain injury significantly and improves outcome.
