Are you struggling with tinnitus and looking for relief? Here are seven at-home remedies that may help your tinnitus symptoms.

1. White noise machines

White noise machines can help mask tinnitus ringing or buzzing sounds, making it easier to focus on other things. Try using a white noise machine while you sleep or during quiet moments throughout the day.

2. Relaxation techniques

Relaxation techniques like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety, which may exacerbate tinnitus symptoms. Incorporating these practices into your daily routine can promote well-being and help you manage your tinnitus.

3. Sound therapy

Listening to calming sounds or music at a low volume can help distract your brain from the ringing or buzzing caused by tinnitus. Widex SoundRelax provides soothing sound stimulation through your hearing aids or an app, helping to mask the tinnitus sounds and promote relaxation.

4. Regular exercise

Regular physical activity can help improve blood circulation and reduce stress, which can be beneficial in managing tinnitus. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

5. Proper sleep

Establishing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a comfortable sleep environment can help improve the quality of your rest. Good sleep routines can also help reduce tinnitus-related stress and anxiety.

6. Limit caffeine and alcohol

Caffeine and alcohol can sometimes worsen tinnitus symptoms. Try cutting back on these substances to see if they affect your tinnitus experience.

7. Dietary changes

Some people find that certain foods or additives, like salt or artificial sweeteners, can aggravate their tinnitus. Experiment with your diet to identify any potential triggers and adjust accordingly.

Living with tinnitus can be challenging, but several at-home remedies and solutions can provide relief. If you aren’t getting the relief you need, contact a tinnitus specialist for more support.

Why do our ears clog on planes?

The main culprit behind clogged ears on planes, also called “airplane ears”, is the change in air pressure. As the plane takes off and lands, the air pressure outside your ear decreases and increases, causing your eardrum to push outward and get sucked inward. This pressure change can be too much for the Eustachian tube, leading to discomfort or even painful barotrauma (airplane ears).

Five Tips to Prevent Clogged Ears

Buy filtered earplugs: These handy earplugs protect your ears from loud noises and help equalize external air pressure, reducing discomfort. You can often buy them in the airport gift shop.

Swallow, yawn, chew, or suck on candy: These actions stimulate the muscles that open the Eustachian tubes, alleviating inner ear pressure.

Do the Toynbee Maneuver (during take-off): Pinch your nose closed and take a few sips of water simultaneously to equalize ear pressure.

Do the Valsalva Maneuver (during landing): Pinch your nose closed and gently blow air through your nose with a closed mouth to pop clogged ears.

Take a nasal spray for congestion: If you have a cold, using an over-the-counter nasal spray 30 minutes before take-off and landing can help alleviate pressure.
Post-flight ear care

If your ears remain clogged after flying, try the Valsalva or Toynbee maneuvers again. If those don't work, steam your ears by placing your head over a bowl of boiling water with a towel draped over it. Adding a few drops of lavender oil or eucalyptus can help reduce pain.
