Sharing an interesting case.
A couple of weeks back we had a 52 year old lady who came to us with h/o weakness of left side of upper and lower limb 3 hrs back which improved on its own after couple of minutes but had mild paraesthesias (abnormal sensations). We did a brain MRI which showed acute brain stroke with right internal carotid artery (major blood supplying artery to brain) occlusion (block). She was admitted at our hospital and post admission she suddenly developed dense hemiplegia (zero movement) of left upper and lower limb along with aphasia (inability to speak). We explained the patient's relative for the need of urgent intervention and need to shift to a "stroke ready" setup.
The family took a while to take a decision but agreed finally and the patient was shifted to Banker’s Heart institute. As patient was still in the window period, the team at Banker’s heart performed "Mechanical Thrombectomy" (removing clot through a wire without surgery) of right ICA and MCA and blood flow through the blocked artery was established. Pt also had critical narrowing of right ICA (major blood supplying artery to the brain) for which stent placement was done. The patient's health improved remarkably. She is able to walk, with no major residual paralysis and has regained her speech.
The patient, and her family, were immensely thankful to the Doctors' team at Nand Hospital and Bankers Hospital and expressed deepest gratitude.
Important message here is that early treatment (usually within 3-4hours of developing paralysis, earlier the better) is very important for preventing disability in patients having attack of paralysis. Delay often leads to permanent paralysis/disability.
The advances in medical science has given us options to deal with paralysis early and prevent / minimise DISABILITY.
Spread the word so that all get aware of such treatment options!!
RIGHT INTERVENTION AT RIGHT TIME CAN REALLY PREVENT DISABILITY!!
