A quiet Thursday afternoon was spent with ophthalmologists from Sir Sayaji General Hospital and medical College, sharing cases on cornea by Dr Meeta Mungale on a topic close to her heart . Teaching is the best way to learn oneself and also a way to give back to society and kindling young minds in the beginning of their ophthalmology careers. The talk was very much appreciated and thanks to the team of for the help and support and to our patients who trust us with their vision!

Doctors day .. why did I ever choose to be an eye doctor..would I ever do it again in my another life? This profession came to me in heredity from my parents both doctors.. seeing them work so hard and seeing their patients smile made an impact on my young mind.. getting myopia in childhood made me think to be an ophthalmologist at the age of 12 .. hard work and destiny favoured me and I could become an ophthalmologist and could train at the apex eye institutes including the L V Prasad Eye Institute at Hyderabad.. marriage also took me closer to ophthalmology..so it becomes your first love actually.. I think many eye doctors would agree that they live and breathe ophthalmology.. such is the story of almost all other specialities as well .. helping others heal comes naturally to them ..but this year's theme points to a very poignant issue..the mental and emotional health of doctors themselves! The responsibility of cure weighs heavily on them..many spending sleepless nights pondering over the outcomes of their patients eyes..being indirectly responsible for everything.. things not in their hands too..
Over these 25 years of practice in this profession I realise that the doctor must take care of themselves first and set a role model for the society..the other day I heard someone say my profession is more stressful than yours.. that doctor ruined my case.. to them I have only one answer.. try being in this side and deal with the living human body itself..( the car is running and you are repairing it..)..and no doctor( except the black sheep) would like to see their patients unhappy..
Society needs to remember doctors are also human beings and need to unwind.. people need to restrain asking their problems ( here the eyes) in public..and looking for free medical advice.
And most importantly the government really needs to stop treating patients as consumer.. this profession is beyond that..
To answer my question in the beginning..yes I would be an ophthalmologist in my next life and I am grateful for the opportunity to help patients see better and better! It's a privilege and pleasure beyond words! Dr Meeta Mungale

The ocular surface of the eye is part of the eye exposed to the atmosphere..many disorders of this surface include dry eye, allergies, chemical injuries and many other immune mediated diseases..CME(continuing medical education) was organised by Dr Meeta Mungale for the benefit of all ophthalmologists of Vadodara and external faculty Dr Swapnil Bhalekar was kind enough to accept the invite and spare a precious Sunday to discuss with all the nuances in dealing with the ocular surface. We also had local cornea faculties from Vadodara and Ahmedabad who also presented few interesting cases and meaningful discussions helped achieve the goal of learning further in the field of cornea for the benefit of our patients. Doctors spend even Sundays on learning and teaching! These focussed meetings promote camaraderie among the doctors and benefit the patients overall. Gleanings from the meeting..
