BLEPHARITIS
Blepharitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the area around the base of the eye lashes.
The two most common causes are bacteria (Staphylococcus) and scalp dandruff.

It occurs in two forms - anterior and posterior.
Anterior Blepharitis- affects the outside front of the eyelid, where the eyelashes are attached. The two most common causes are bacteria (Staphylococcus) and scalp dandruff.
Posterior Blepharitis- affects the inner eyelid and is caused by problems with the oil glands in this part of the eyelid.

CAUSES
1. An inflammatory reaction to bacteria that normally live on eyelids
2. Seborrhoeic dermatitis or rosacea
3. Allergies
4. Infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV)
5. Dandruff
6. Blocked oil gland on your eyelid
7. Exposure to dogs and cats
8. Hormonal problems
9. Parasitic infestation - mites

SYMPTOMS
1. Itchy eyelids.
2. Red eyes.
3. Irritated and watery eyes.
4. Scales at the base of the eyelashes, similar to dandruff.
5. Burning eyes.
6. Oversensitivity to light (photophobia).
7. Sensation of having something in the eye.
8. Blurry vision.

MANAGEMENT
Apply warm moist compresses to your eyelids for 10-20 minutes four times per day to cleanse them and to reduce discomfort. Artificial tears may also make the eyes feel more comfortable. Gentle wash Try gently to remove the crusts without damaging the eyelids. Do not use any eye makeup for some days and even share eye makeup with others.

TREATMENT
1. Arg.Nit- redness and swelling on eyelid margin. Thick crusts may appear on the lids with swelling. This may be accompanied by sticking of eyelids in the morning.
2. Apis mel- for stinging pain in eye. Eyelids tend to feel heavy, are red, swollen and may be itchy too. Sensitivity to light may also be present in a few cases.
3. Bell- for swollen and painful eyelids. This is most worse on closing the eyes. Eyes are sensitive to light. A sensation of heat and burning in the eyes are prominent. Sand in the eye sensation also appears.
4. Chrysarobinum- eruptions and itching of eyelids. Lids are red and covered with dandruff like scales. This should be tried last of all.
5. Conium- lids are heavy, thick and indurated, epithelioma (cancer) of lids.
6. Euphrasia- for redness and watering from eyes. There may be burning and biting sensation in the eyes along with grittiness.
7. Graphites- scales at the basis of eye lashes. Eyelids margins are highly inflamed and may stick together especially at the night time.
8. Hepar Sulph- throbbing pain with inflammation. This will be used in the beginning of treatment.
9. Merc sol- burning sensation is more prominent here. The eyelid margins are covered with scabs in some cases. Itching and dry heat are felt in the eyes.
10. Mezerium- eczema of lids with thick hard crust.
11. Morbillinum- followed by measles or bad effect of.
12. Petroleum- for dry and itchy eye lids. There is a need to rub the eyelids frequently. In some cases smarting sensation in the eyes is felt.
Loss of eyelashes may be found here. It will be used in the middle of treatment.
13. Staphis- margins are dry with hard styes or tarsal tomours.
