Introduction of Cantonment Board, Varanasi
On the banks of the sacred river Ganga, at the confluence of two of its tributaries the Varuna and the Assi lies the oldest living city in the world, the eternal city of Varanasi. Board as a municipal body in Cantonments was basically in response to the need for maintenance of proper sanitation and health and hygiene of these areas. Board function extends to the entire gamut of Municipal Administration. In addition to providing basic amenities, the Cantt. Board also ensures various social, cultural, educational and medical institutions to the residents of the area. The history of Cantonment started with the land administration for quartering of troops. Housing was the core objective which attracted the civilian population also to reside in the Cantonment. The Bazaar area was recognized and the Cantonment clearly defined in military, bungalow and civil area. The total area of the Varanasi Cantt. is 1179 acres. The notified civil area extends over 29.29 acres where civilians are residing. As per 2011 census, population of the Cantonment is 14126. In accordance with Cantt. Act 2006 Varanasi Cantonment is classified as Category II . Cantonment Board is a body corporate created under statute.
