📍Mango Season Alert for Pet Parents

It’s mango season in Kerala—and while we enjoy the fruit, it can be dangerous for our pets.
Every year, we see 5–6 cases of dogs with intestinal blockage caused by swallowed mango seeds, often requiring emergency surgery.
One such case was a Labrador brought to our clinic with a history of not eating and vomiting blood for 3 days. On examination, we suspected an intestinal obstruction. Surgery revealed a mango seed lodged in the intestine, which was successfully removed
Take Home Message: Mango seeds are large, hard, and indigestible. If swallowed, they can block the intestine and become life-threatening.
🥭 Always discard mango seeds safely
🥭 Never allow pets to play with or chew them
🥭 Seek immediate veterinary care if your pet shows vomiting, loss of appetite, or discomfort
Prevention is always better than surgery.

📍“When Balance Fails: Otitis in Guinea Pigs”

A guinea pig presented with head tilt, circling, and ear discharge is highly suggestive of otitis (ear infection)—most commonly otitis media or interna. This condition often begins as a bacterial infection (frequently involving Streptococcus or Pseudomonas) and may extend deeper into the inner ear, affecting balance and coordination.
Clinical signs include persistent head tilt, circling to one side, loss of balance, incoordination, ear scratching, pain, reduced appetite, and visible discharge from the ear. In advanced cases, neurological signs like rolling or inability to stand may be seen.
Precautions and care
Avoid indiscriminate use of ear drops without diagnosis, as middle/inner ear involvement can worsen with inappropriate treatment. Maintain good hygiene, prevent moisture accumulation, and monitor closely for recurrence. Prompt treatment can significantly improve recovery and prevent permanent vestibular damage.

📍A Ring That Became a Trap

A Labrador Retriever was brought to us with his collar ring locked inside the lower jaw—unable to close his mouth or eat.
With careful handling, we cut the metal ring and released the jaw. Immediate relief.
Take-home message:
Check your pet’s collar regularly. A small mistake can become a painful emergency.

📍From Death to Life

A tiny patient arrived in a small crate — comatose, almost gone.
There was barely a sign of life… but we chose to believe.
With patience, treatment, and prayers, we fought for him.
Slowly, life returned… a breath, a movement, a miracle.
From the edge of death, he came back to life.
Sometimes, it’s not just medicine that heals —
it’s faith, dedication, and the grace of the Almighty.

📍Swimmer Puppy Syndrome – A Short Clinical Story

“We can’t walk properly… our chest is flat…”

Two 22-day-old German Shepherd Dog puppies were presented with inability to stand, limbs splayed sideways, and early chest flattening—typical of swimmer puppy syndrome.
Likely causes included slippery flooring, rapid weight gain, and poor muscle development, genetic predisposition, nutritional imbalance
Immediate intervention was started:
Non-slippery bedding, corrective bandaging (hobbling) to bring limbs under the body, gentle physiotherapy, and feeding control.
Take-home message:
Swimmer puppy syndrome is reversible with early intervention—simple measures and timely care can restore normal mobility.

📍 Hidden Testicle → Tumor – A Preventable Problem
A local male dog was presented with swelling in the groin and difficulty walking. On examination, it was found to be an undescended testicle (inguinal cryptorchidism) that had remained trapped in the inguinal canal and later developed into a tumor mass.
Surgical removal (orchiectomy) was performed, and the dog recovered well.
Take-home message:
If a testicle is missing, don’t ignore it. Retained testicles have a high risk of turning cancerous—early surgical removal can prevent this.

📍 Respiratory Issues in Brachycephalic Breeds

Brachycephalic dogs like Pug, French Bulldog, English Bulldog, and Shih Tzu commonly suffer from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome due to their short-nosed structure, leading to noisy breathing, panting, and exercise intolerance. Precaution is crucial—avoid heat exposure (especially in humid climates), maintain ideal body weight, use a harness instead of a collar, restrict strenuous activity, and ensure good ventilation. Early recognition and timely veterinary care can prevent serious respiratory distress and improve quality of life.

📍 Importance of Blood Pressure Monitoring in Dogs

Blood pressure monitoring in dogs is an essential part of routine veterinary care. Conditions like Chronic Kidney Disease, Cushing’s Disease, and heart disease can silently cause hypertension, leading to serious complications such as kidney damage, heart strain, neurological signs, and even sudden blindness. Measuring blood pressure is a simple, non-invasive procedure using Doppler or automated devices, usually from the limb or tail in a calm environment for accuracy.
👉 Normal systolic blood pressure in dogs ranges between 110–160 mmHg. Values above this require evaluation, especially if persistent.
Regular monitoring is particularly important in geriatric pets, chronic illness cases, and before anesthesia. Early detection and timely management can prevent irreversible organ damage and significantly improve your pet’s quality of life.

📍“Malka’s Fight Back – From Weakness to Hope

Malka, a 4-month-old Chippiparai puppy, came to us in a heartbreaking condition—severely emaciated, weak, and barely active. Her tiny body told a story of silent suffering. On examination, the cause became clear: severe anchylostomiasis (hookworm infestation). These blood-sucking intestinal parasites drain nutrients and cause anemia, weight loss, weakness, and sometimes even life-threatening blood loss in young puppies. Immediate treatment was started with proper deworming protocol, supportive care, and nutritional rehabilitation. Gradually, Malka began to respond
This case is a reminder to all pet parents: regular deworming is not optional, it is lifesaving. Puppies should be dewormed every 2 weeks until 3 months of age, then monthly up to 6 months, and regularly thereafter as advised by your veterinarian. Maintain hygiene, avoid contaminated soil exposure, and ensure timely vaccination and nutrition. Early detection and prevention can save lives—just like Malka’s. At Felican Pet Hospital, we believe… We care. We cure.
