1.) Head scarf or Head cap in babies will prevent baby Head growth.

Not true.

Baby's head growth and size and shape can not be controlled by caps.

Baby's should use Head cap for temperature regulation only.

2.) Scrub bath in baby removes baby hair.

No its not related. Babys loose body hair naturally within 1st few months regardless of scrub bath.

Adult hair has no relationship with baby hair.

3.) Baby soap or baby lotion will cause pigmentation.

No, not true. Babies naturally look fair at birth and attain natural complexion by 3 months age.

People correlate this with soap or lotion use and change.

Color of a baby is determined by genetics and sun exposure .

4.) Kajal will improve baby eye size.

No. Its a myth. It can cause harmful Chemical exposure to baby eyes.

Eye size is genetically determined.

5.) Applying turmeric or betel leaf on baby's head will cure cold.

No its not true. It makes baby more uncomfortable. Its not harmful though.

Few practice application of camphor to baby's palms and souls or chest.

This can be dangerous and cause seizure.

Do not use camphor in kids.

Who should get?

All babies, either formula feed or Breastfeeding should get.

What age?

From Birth to atleast 1 year.

Better if given till 2 years age.

How much?

400 IU daily.

What time?

Better in morning as you won't miss. But its ok at any time.

Better give after feed.

Can we mix with feed?

Yes you can mix it in a spoon of milk if baby doesn't like it directly.

Iron drops?

Who should get?

Full term born Babies after completing 4 months age.

Very important in exclusively breastfed babies.

When to give?

Don't give immediately after feed.

Better to give 1 hr before feed.

But few kids might vomit Iron drops.

In that case give after feeds, its ok.

Can we give both Vitamin D and Iron drops at same time?

Yes we can give , but after some time of feed.

Don't mix Iron drops with milk ever.

Our grandparents like coconut oil a lot.

If head is hot ? Apply coconut oil.

Tummy pain? Apply coconut oil.

Child has fever?

Apply coconut oil all over body.

Is it good or bad? Lets find out.

1.) Baby's head is warm than body.

Its because blood supply will be higher for brain as its age of brain development.

Very common in babies less than 1 year.

When grandparents notice this they tend to apply coconut oil thinking it will help head cooling.

Actually this doesn't decrease head warmth, only that we will not touch the head because of the oil.

2.) This oil can clog pores on scalp and can lead to dirt accumulation.

3.) When kid has fever few parents apply oil all over body.

Its very dangerous practice.

During fever body tries to dissipate heat threw skin pores.

Applying oil will close this pathway and trap heat causing increase in temperature.

4.) As child is already irritable due to fever this will lead to hyper stimulation and discomfort.

Avoid oil application during fever.

For head coconut oil is not dangerous but not useful either.

How to handle fever in kids?

Give right dose of paracetamol as per doctor prescription.

Wipe body with cloth dipped in luke warm water and let it dry.

No coconut oil in fever.
