On the occasion of World Immunization Week, Dr. Guru Prasad, Senior Neonatologist at KIMS Cuddles, has urged families to look at vaccines not merely as “injections for infants,” but as powerful tools that offer lifelong protection. Highlighting the 2026 theme, “Vaccines Work for Every Generation,” he emphasized that immunization is a lifelong responsibility for every individual.
“Working in the Neonatal ICU, I witness every day how fragile life can be,” he said. “From birth to old age, vaccines act as a protective bridge that safely guides a child through life. Over the last 50 years, vaccines have saved nearly 150 million lives—this means about six lives are saved every minute.”
Addressing Common Myths
“Are too many vaccines harmful for babies?”
Many parents worry that multiple vaccines may overload a child’s immunity. In reality, a newborn’s immune system is designed to handle thousands of germs every day. A vaccine simply acts like a “practice match” before facing the actual disease, safely training the body to fight infections.
“Are vaccines only for children?”
A common misconception is that vaccinations are only needed in early childhood. However, immunity decreases over time. Adults also need booster doses for diseases like flu and tetanus, which not only protect themselves but also safeguard infants and the elderly around them.
Globally, childhood deaths have reduced by nearly 40% due to vaccination. “In our wards, we fight for every breath,” he added. “Choosing science over rumours is the greatest form of love you can show your family. It is a responsibility that protects the loved ones waiting for you at home.”
KIMS Cuddles has advised all families to review their vaccination records during this week.
Preventing disease before it occurs is not just a medical decision—it is a promise towards a healthier future.
