Stop the Puree! ✋ (When and how to level up textures)

Is your little one still on “smoothie mode”? 🥣 By 8 months, your baby’s oral motor skills are ready for a challenge! Moving through food consistencies isn’t just about nutrition—it’s about teaching those tiny jaw muscles how to chew and swallow safely.

Here is the 2026 cheat sheet for texture transitions:
✨ 6 Months: The “Smooth Start.” Thin enough to slide off the spoon.
✨ 8-9 Months: The “Mashed Move.” Think lumpy mashed potatoes. This stimulates the tongue to move food to the sides of the mouth.
✨ 10-12 Months: The “Pincer Pro.” Small, soft-cooked bits they can pick up.
Pro-Tip: If your baby gags, don’t panic! Gagging is a natural reflex as they learn. It’s different from choking—it’s just their body saying “Whoa, new texture!”

A Lifelong Gift of Health – Vaccination

Dr. Guru Prasad Peruri
Consultant Neonatologist
KIMS Cuddles, Sheelanagar, Visakhapatnam

On the occasion of World Immunization Week, Dr. Guru Prasad, Senior Neonatologist at KIMS Cuddles, has urged families to look at vaccines not merely as “injections for infants,” but as powerful tools that offer lifelong protection. Highlighting the 2026 theme, “Vaccines Work for Every Generation,” he emphasized that immunization is a lifelong responsibility for every individual.

“Working in the Neonatal ICU, I witness every day how fragile life can be,” he said. “From birth to old age, vaccines act as a protective bridge that safely guides a child through life. Over the last 50 years, vaccines have saved nearly 150 million lives—this means about six lives are saved every minute.”

Addressing Common Myths

“Are too many vaccines harmful for babies?”
Many parents worry that multiple vaccines may overload a child’s immunity. In reality, a newborn’s immune system is designed to handle thousands of germs every day. A vaccine simply acts like a “practice match” before facing the actual disease, safely training the body to fight infections.

“Are vaccines only for children?”
A common misconception is that vaccinations are only needed in early childhood. However, immunity decreases over time. Adults also need booster doses for diseases like flu and tetanus, which not only protect themselves but also safeguard infants and the elderly around them.

Globally, childhood deaths have reduced by nearly 40% due to vaccination. “In our wards, we fight for every breath,” he added. “Choosing science over rumours is the greatest form of love you can show your family. It is a responsibility that protects the loved ones waiting for you at home.”

KIMS Cuddles has advised all families to review their vaccination records during this week.

Preventing disease before it occurs is not just a medical decision—it is a promise towards a healthier future.

🧠Neurological Monitoring in the NICU – A Step Towards Precision Neonatology
📍 CME, Kakinada

I had the privilege of speaking at a recent Continuing Medical Education (CME) event in Kakinada, where I presented on a topic very close to my heart: Neurological Monitoring in the NICU
The session was interactive and well-received by an enthusiastic audience comprising pediatricians and postgraduate students. It's always a pleasure to engage with bright minds and fellow clinicians who are eager to advance neonatal care through updated, evidence-based practices.

These modalities — aEEG and Cranial Doppler — are critical tools that help us in the early detection and management of neurological conditions in newborns, especially in high-risk NICU settings. As we move toward more refined and targeted neonatal care, understanding and applying such technologies becomes essential.

Thank you to the organizers and moderators for the opportunity and excellent coordination.

I continue to stay committed to advancing neonatal care at KIMS ICON Hospital, Visakhapatnam, and look forward to more opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

To the budding pediatricians and neonatologists – let's stay connected, keep learning, and push boundaries for the betterment of neonatal outcomes.

Honored to Share Knowledge at SRMC-CRANE workshop
I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to educate students about neonatal ventilation, a topic close to my heart. What made it even more special was chairing the sessions alongside my esteemed teachers and stalwarts in the field of neonatology!
It's moments like these that remind me of the incredible journey I've been on, from being a student to becoming a teacher. I'm grateful for the trust placed in me and I'm proud to be part of this amazing community of neonatologists! Sarat Chandra Gullapalli Avn Raja
Let's continue to share our knowledge, inspire each other, and work together to provide the best possible care for our tiny patients!
