Read below to know more about W position ๐
W sitting is a sitting position in which a child sits on the floor with their knees bent and their legs splayed out to the sides, forming a "W" shape with their legs.
Is 'W' sitting bad?
Often children move in and out of a W-sitting position while theyโre playing. It is okay for a child to move into a W-position sometimes, as long as children are not sitting in this position too frequently.
But here are some reasons why W sitting( prolonged )is not good for babies and tips to avoid this position:
1. It can put excessive strain on the hips, knees, and ankles, causing potential issues with joint alignment and stability.
2. W sitting can lead to decreased core strength and stability, which are important for proper posture and movement.
3. This position can also lead to tightness in the muscles of the hips and legs, which can affect mobility and flexibility.
Tips to avoid W sitting in kids:
1. Encourage your child to sit in various positions, such as cross-legged, with legs straight out in front, or on their knees, to promote flexibility and strength in different muscle groups.
2. Provide opportunities for your child to engage in activities that require sitting at a table or on a chair, rather than on the floor always.
3. For older kids 2yr+ ,teach them about the importance of good posture and proper body alignment while sitting, and encourage them to sit with their legs out in front or crossed at the ankles.
4. If you notice your child frequently W sitting, gently remind them to change their position and offer alternative seating options.
๐ When should I be worried?
Contact your childโs pediatrician if you notice your childโs W-sitting is in combination with other signs or symptoms, like low muscle tone, limited mobility, lack of balance, delays in fine motor skills, pain, or if there is hip dysplasia.
