Winter, known as Hemanta Ritu (early winter) and Shishira Ritu (late winter) in Ayurveda, is a season where the bodyβs strength and immunity are naturally heightened due to the accumulation of energy. However, it is also a time when certain precautions and routines are necessary to maintain balance and prevent imbalances of Vata and Kapha doshas. Here are some Ayurvedic winter care tips:
1. Dietary Recommendations
Warm, nourishing foods: Consume foods that are freshly cooked, warm, and unctuous to maintain body heat and energy.
Sweet, sour, and salty tastes: These tastes help balance Vata dosha, which tends to aggravate in cold weather.
Foods to include: Whole grains (wheat, rice, millet), lentils, ghee, nuts, sesame seeds, jaggery, and dairy products like warm milk.
Spices: Ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, and cloves to improve digestion and circulation.
Seasonal vegetables: Include root vegetables (carrots, beets, radishes) and greens (spinach, fenugreek).
Avoid cold and raw foods: Steer clear of refrigerated foods, cold drinks, and excessive raw salads, which can increase Vata dosha.
2. Daily Routine (Dinacharya)
Oil massage (Abhyanga): Use warming oils like sesame or mustard oil to keep the body warm, nourish the skin, and pacify Vata.
Bathing: Use warm water for bathing to maintain body temperature and relax muscles.
Clothing: Wear warm, layered clothing to protect against the cold and avoid dryness.
Exercise: Engage in moderate physical activity like yoga or brisk walking to stimulate circulation and balance Kapha dosha.
3. Herbal Support
Chyawanprash: A rejuvenating herbal jam rich in Vitamin C, which boosts immunity.
Ashwagandha and Shatavari: For strength and vitality.
