What truly defines a world-class clinical laboratory? It goes beyond accreditation, it’s about consistent performance. This was the core theme of an engaging session on Clinical Laboratory Benchmarking, led by Dr Prachi Chhimwal at the Roche SWAT (Serum Work Area Trendsetters) Bootcamp for KMC Manipal.
The bootcamp brought together clinical laboratory technologists and section heads from hospitals and labs across India, with a shared goal: to strengthen core operational excellence in routine laboratory practice.

Advanced diagnostics play a vital role by detecting infections during asymptomatic stages, allowing healthcare providers to intervene before irreversible liver damage occurs. Viral hepatitis is now the second deadliest communicable disease worldwide, claiming more lives than HIV. What makes it especially dangerous is that most people with chronic viral hepatitis remain undiagnosed for years, often until severe liver damage has already occurred. Without timely detection and treatment, the disease continues to spread silently. Expanding access to testing is critical to reducing preventable deaths and breaking the chain of transmission.

You may feel perfectly fine, but your liver could be fighting a silent battle. Infectious diseases of the liver, like Hepatitis C, often remain undetected because they rarely cause immediate discomfort and remain asymptomatic. Without early diagnosis, the damage progresses unnoticed, leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer. So remember, absence of symptoms is not a guarantee of good liver health. Get tested and stay informed.
While Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) offers a critical layer of safety by detecting infections earlier than traditional methods, it is still not used universally across all blood banks. This gap means that not every unit of donated blood undergoes the highest level of screening.
Whether you are donating blood or receiving it, it’s important to be proactive and informed. Asking whether the blood has been NAT-tested empowers you to ensure the safest possible transfusion. Sometimes, asking the right question can make all the difference, because it could save a life.
