It was a crowning moment of the glorious year 2023 for me when I was awarded the "Service Excellence in Surgical Oncology" award by the Times Health group.
This was in recognition for my work in advancing the field of cancer surgery in a Tier 2 City like Visakhapatnam striving to offer the best.
The aim was to offer Minimally invasive oncosurgery ( through Robotic and Laparoscopic) techniques to our patients to enhance better recovery and remove the stigma of debilitating surgery.
A bulk of my patients are underprivileged and it is my good fortune to be able to serve them.

Thanks to my family, Almighty, all my teachers well-wishers and patients for the honour conferred on me.

AGE IS NOT A BAR FOR CANCER TREATMENT

We are able to offer curative treatments to patients and they are able to live a long and normal life. Cancer is no longer a death sentence.

This post is about one such 88 year old who should be an inspiration to all cancer patients.

5 years ago he suffered from re**al cancer, underwent a major surgery uneventfully, took chemotherapy. As it was done with ROBOTIC assistance, he had a quick and smooth recovery. This month, he came with test reports suggesting that he continues to be cancer free and leading a very active life.

He is a PhD and Veterinary Doctor who served our Vizag Zoo for many years and can continue to speak for hours together on matters close to his heart – indeed, a very vibrant personality.

While dealing with cancer patients, we closely follow them up with regular investigations for around 5 years because the critical time when the cancer may return is the first 3 to 5 years. So, crossing 5 years is a mental milestone. It is very unlikely that the cancer will return.

Hats off to this senior person who is living to the fullest at his ripe old age….
I tell his story to all my patients/patient relatives who ask me – “is it worth treating this cancer in a 60 or 70 year old?”

Happy to share...

Taking the Minimally Invasive Surgery program at Medicover Hospitals MVP Visakhapatnam forward.
We performed a keyhole chest surgery to treat a patient with fluid accumulation in the lungs. A procedure called VATS decortication.
VATS stands for Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery. It is similar to Laparoscopic surgery. Unlike laparoscopic surgery which is performed for problems in the abdomen, VATS is performed for problems in the chest.

The benefits of VATS are manifold - less pain, better lung function, early recovery and quick return to daily activities .

Infact the incremental benefit of VATS over open thoracotomy is more than for laparoscopy over open laparotomy procedures

We regularly perform major VATS surgeries like Esophagectomy, Mediastinal tumor resection, Lung cancer resection , Decortication, etc..

He gave me a bright idea on how to celebrate my daughter's birthday...more about it in the next post…
