DID YOU KNOW?

Not everyone exposed to TB gets infected, and not everyone infected develops the disease! Here’s how TB progresses:

🔸 Exposure – You breathe in TB bacteria but your body clears them. No symptoms. Not contagious.
🔸 Latent TB Infection (LTBI) – The bacteria stay in your body but remain inactive. No symptoms. Not contagious. Positive TB (Mantoux/IGRA-TB Gold) test.
🔸 Active TB Disease – The bacteria multiply, causing symptoms like cough, fever, and weight loss. Contagious. Positive TB tests (Both Tests/IGRA and microbiological tests).

🚨 Who’s at higher risk for TB disease?
👉 People with HIV, diabetes, smoking history, weak immunity
👉 Close contacts of TB patients in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces
👉 Those not vaccinated with BCG (which protects against severe TB forms in children)

🩺 Why does this matter?
💡 Latent TB can reactivate if immunity weakens! Screening and preventive treatment can stop TB before it spreads.

✅ Not everyone exposed to TB gets infected, and not everyone infected gets the disease—host factors and immunity play a crucial role.✅ Latent TB infection (LTBI) can persist for years without symptoms but may reactivate if immunity weakens.✅ Public health interventions should focus on early screening and preventive treatment in high-risk individuals (HIV+, diabetics, immunocompromised).✅ BCG vaccination offers some protection but does not prevent infection—only severe forms of disease (e.g., TB meningitis in children).
✅ Diagnosing latent TB is different from active TB—infection tests (TST/IGRA) are positive in both, but microbiological confirmation is only in active TB cases.
