"Does your husband make you happy?"

శ్రావణమాసంలో ఆచరించే ముఖ్యమైన పండుగలలో " గరుడ పంచమి" ఒకటి. గరుత్మంతుడు సూర్యరధసారధి అయిన అనూరుడికి తమ్ముడు. మేరు పర్వతంతో సమానమైన శరీరం కలవాడు, సప్తసముద్రాల్లోని జలాన్నంతటినీ ఒక్కరెక్క విసురుతో ఎగరగొట్టగల రెక్కల బలం కలవాడు. అందువలనే అతడికి సువర్ణుడు అనే పేరు కుడా ఉన్నది.

గరుడపంచమికి సంబంధించి భవిష్యత్పురాణంలో ప్రస్తావన ఉంది. సముద్రమధనంలో " ఉచ్పైశ్రవం" అనే గుఱ్ఱం ఉద్భవించింది. అది శ్వేతవర్ణం కలది. కశ్యపుడు, వినత ల కుమారుడు గరుడుడు. ఓ రోజు వినత ఆమే తోడుకోడలు కద్రువ విహార సమయంలో ఆ తెల్లటి గుఱ్ఱాన్ని చుసారు. కద్రువ, వినతతో గుఱ్ఱం తెల్లగా ఉన్న తోకమాత్రం నల్లగా ఉంది అని చెప్పగా, వినత గుఱ్ఱం మొత్తం తెల్లగానే ఉంది అని చెప్పింది. వాళ్ళిద్దరు ఒ పందెం వేసుకొన్నారు, గుఱ్ఱపు తోక నల్లగాఉంటే వినత కద్రువకు దాస్యం చేయలని, గుఱ్ఱం మొత్తం తెల్లగా ఉంటే వినతకు కద్రువ దాస్యం చేయలని పందెం.

కద్రువ తన కపటబుద్దితో. సంతానమైన నాగులను పిలిచి అశ్వవాలాన్ని పట్టి వ్రేలాడమని కోరగా. దానికి వారెవ్వరు అంగీకరించలేదు. కోపగించిన కద్రువ " జనమేజయుని సర్పయాగంలో నశించాలని" శపించింది. ఒక్క కర్కోటకుడు అనే కుమారుడు అశ్వవాలాని పట్టి వ్రేలాడి తల్లి పందాన్ని గెలిపించాడు.

కొద్దికాలం తరువాత గర్బవతి అయిన వినత, తనకు పుట్టిన రెండు గుడ్లలో మొదటి దాన్ని పగులగొట్టి చూసింది. అప్పటికి ఇంకా పూర్తిగా ఆకారం ఏర్పడని అనూరుడు బైటకురాగానే " అమ్మా నీ తొందరుపాటువలన నేను అవయవాలు లేకుండానే జన్మించాను, కాని నీవు మాత్రం రెండవ గుడ్డును తొందరపడి పగులగొట్టవద్దు" అని చెప్పి, సూర్యభగవానుడి రధసారధిగా వెళ్ళిపోయాడు. కొద్దికాలం తరువాత జన్మించిన గరుడుడు తల్లి దాశ్యం చూడలేక, దాశ్యవిముక్తి కోసం అమృతం తెచ్చివమ్మన్న నాగుల మాటకు అనుగుణంగా అమృతం తెచ్చిచ్చి, అమ్మకు దాశ్యం నుండి విముక్తి కలిగిచ్చాడు. అమృతభాండాన్ని తీసుకొని వెళ్తున్న గరుత్మంతుడిని ఇంద్రుడు వజ్రాయుధంతో అడ్డుకొనబోగా, తన తల్లి దాస్యత్వం పోగొట్టడానికే ఇలా తీసుకెళ్తున్నానని విన్నవించాడు.

నిర్మలమైన మనస్సు, తెలివైన పిల్లలకోసం చేసే పూజ గరుడపంచమి.

గరుడ పంచమి రోజున మహిళలు స్నానాంతరం ముగ్గులు పెట్టిన పీఠపై అరటి ఆకును పరచి, బియ్యంపోసి, వారి శక్తి మేర బంగారు, వెండి నాగపడిగను ప్రతిష్టించి, పూజచేసి, పాయస నైవేద్యం పెడ్తారు. మరి కొన్ని ప్రాంతాలలో పుట్టలో పాలుపోస్తారు. ఇలా మనపూజలందుకొనే గరుడిని వంటి మాతృప్రేమకల కుమారుడు కావాలని తెలిపే గరుడ పంచమి వ్రతం అనంత సౌభాగ్యాలను కలుగచేస్తుంది.
