INTRAUTERINE DEVICE (IUD).

The IUD is a contraceptive device that is inserted into the woman’s uterus. A trained provider is required to insert and remove the IUD.

There are two types of IUDs:

1) Copper-bearing IUDs are the most commonly available IUDs in low- and middle-income countries, and are used by approximately 150 million women globally
2) Hormonal IUDs

The Copper-T is a flexible T-shaped device made of plastic and copper. The Copper-T works predominantly by preventing fertilization: It causes a chemical change that alters the s***m, preventing it from reaching the egg.

The hormonal IUD is a T-shaped plastic device that steadily releases a small amount of progestin levonorgestrel each day. It works primarily by thickening cervical mucus and preventing s***m from reaching the egg.
Both copper and hormonal IUDs are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
