Yoga is a psychosomatic discipline—a holistic integration of shareera (body),manas (mind) and Atma(soul). Without the active engagement of the mind, any practice involving asanas (postural exercises) remains merely physical movement and does not qualify as true Yoga. Asanas serve as an entry point to deeper states, but authentic transformation requires inner awareness.
Equally essential are the social and personal ethical frameworks known as Yama and Niyama, which are foundational in Patanjali’s Ashtanga (eight-limbed) Yoga system .
Furthermore, surrender (Ishvara-Pranidhana)—the act of dedicating one’s effort to a higher consciousness—is vital for progressing beyond physical alignment to subtler, meditative states.
