_*Wednesday, May 03, Read: I Samuel 17: 38-50*_

_*ON WHOM OR IN WHAT LIES OUR TRUST?*_

_*“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in THE NAME OF THE LORD ALMIGHTY, THE GOD OF THE armies of Israel, whom you have defied. THIS DAY the Lord will hand you over to me, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. ...” (1 Samuel 17: 45,46)*_

_*How could the young David talk so courageously standing in front of the huge giant? How could he be so confident of his victory even before the battle began? Because he knew that the victory does not reside in spears or swords or shields or bows, but in the mighty power of the Lord. David's trust was not in the army but his trust was in the Lord Almighty. He was sure that the same God who had protected him earlier from the lion and the bear was there with him as he faced the uncircumcised Philistine giant and would grant victory. He also had the confidence that he would not die as he was anointed by the Lord to sit on the throne of Israel. We too face giants in our lives time to time - giants of fear, anxiety, financial breakdown, diseases and so on. Our trials may be as huge as the Philistine giant Goliath that David faced, or they may be scorching as the fiery furnace that the three Jewish youth faced, or they may be as fearsome as the roaring lions that Daniel faced. Whatever it is let us remember that God allows such giants in our lives not to destroy us or to threaten us, but to give us victory. These giants are there as part of God's eternal plan - to make us grow stronger in our faith. Dear friends, where is our trust as we face the giants in our lives? Is it in people, or in self, or in our bank balance? All these will fail but God never fails. Yes. He never fails those who put their trust in Him. He is a God of power and glory. He gives us victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. In Him we are more than conquerors. AMEN*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, David was able to slay the huge Philistine giant, not by his strength but because of the trust he had in You. He had confidence that You will give him victory. He did not look at the circumstance but You. Let me also not fear the enemy but trust You wholly in my trials. Amen.*_

_*"... This day the Lord has rescued Israel" (I Samuel 11: 13)*_

_*LIVE TO PLEASE GOD*_

_*When Nahash the Ammonite king besieged the Israelite town Jabesh Gilead, the Israelites approached him for a peace talk. But Nahash's terms for peace was severe. He not only wanted the Israelites to surrender to him, but he insisted that he would pluck the right eye of each one of them. When Saul heard this, he assembled 3,30,000 soldiers, broke into the Ammonite camp and slaughtered them. Those who survived scattered to many places. After this incident the Israelites accepted Saul as their hero and their king. This was the proof they wanted - a king with power and might! We might say that it must have been one of the finest moments in Saul's life. But if we read the following verses we would say that Saul's finest moment was neither in assembling the whole nation for war nor in winning a stunning victory against the Ammonites. His finest moment was in dealing with some of his people who spoke ill of him when he was declared as king by Samuel. (1 Samuel 10:27) Saul could have taken revenge on them, but he refused to spoil the day's celebration by such mean action. Most of all, he did not take the credit for the victory but honored God by saying, "This day the Lord has rescued Israel." We learn two important things here. Dear friends, people may not like us when we prosper in life. They would become envious of us and criticize us. Let us not take revenge on them, but graciously forgive them with all good will. Romans 12:17,18 says, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. ... If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Second, let us not become proud and puffed up when we are elevated in life. Let us give God the credit for our success because without Him and without His grace we cannot do anything.*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me not take revenge on people who harm me, but let me have a forgiving heart. Let me leave the matter to You to deal with. Let me not become proud when You bless me, but give You all the glory for without You I cannot achieve anything. Amen.*_

_*Monday, May 01, Read: Proverbs 3: 5-8*_

_*TRUST GOD EVEN WHEN YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND HIS WAYS*_

_*"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3: 5)*_

_*King Solomon in this Proverbs advises us to trust in the Lord and not in any thing else - not in riches, strength, wisdom, not in any works of righteousness, in duties of religion, nor in one’s own self, but to trust in the Lord alone. We should trust Him at all times - in times of affliction, temptation and darkness because all power and strength are in Him to help. His love, grace and mercy are always the same. The Proverbs also says that we should not depend on our own wisdom and understanding, but should seek the direction and blessing of God, or otherwise we will meet with disappointment. Sometimes we may not be able to understand the path God leads us. During such times instead of thinking logically and making decisions based on our knowledge, the best thing to do is to trust the Lord wholly. A century ago, 41 year old Oswald Chambers arrived in Egypt to serve as YMCA Chaplain during World War I. He was assigned to a camp near Cairo. On his first night in 1915, Chambers wrote in his diary, “This area is absolutely desert. It is all immensely unlike anything I have been used to and I am watching with interest the new things God will do and engineer.” Chambers believed and practiced the words of Proverbs 3: 5-6. He wrote, “We have no right to judge where we should be put, or to have preconceived notions as to what God is fitting us for. God engineers everything. Wherever He puts us, our one great aim is to pour out a whole-hearted devotion to Him in that particular work.” Dear friends, let us remember, without the assistance of the Divine Being, we cannot succeed in our life. With that assurance we cannot fall. So into His hands, let us lay our doubts and fears that haunt us, and rest securely trusting Him for all.*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me not think that I can carry on even the ordinary matters of the day without Your counsel. Let me be in the habit of coming to You in the first place before consulting my own will, wisdom or my friends. Let me wholly trust Your timing and Your direction in my life. Amen.*_

_*WALK BY THE SPIRIT AND LIVE!*_

_*"Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall." (I Corinthians 10:12)*_

_*We are truly living in the end times! As the Bible says in many places, in these last days people have become lovers of self, denying God and neglect following the ways of the Lord. Instead of worshipping the only true God they have turned to false gods. Just as the people of Israel turned to worship Baal, soon after the Lord Almighty delivered them from the hands of Pharaoh, today many of God's chosen people make themselves gods out of money, material wealth and prosperity, and fall away from Him! The Israelites ate of a heavenly food, the Manna, and drank the water that sprang forth from the rock in the wilderness. As Paul writes in today's text, they had their spiritual food and drink from Christ, the Rock! Yet, they displeased God with their behavior and so did not enter into the Promised Land. What went wrong? They provoked God! (Psalm 106:29) How? They committed sexual immorality with the women of Moab! (Numbers 25:1) And they worshipped idols! (Exodus 32:6) They complained and murmured against God. (Numbers 21:5) They were the chosen ones and yet they failed to persevere. Dear friends, we ought to be very careful. It's true that we are children of the Most High! It's also true that we are saved by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. But, it is as much true that if we do not keep our eyes on the Lord and keep His commandments, we will ultimately slip from the righteous path that we are presently walking in, and commit the same mistakes that the Israelites did. Let us not walk by the flesh and fall. Let us ask the Lord to help us to walk by the Spirit and live!*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, though I am saved and anointed, at times I slip and fall because my flesh takes over. Lord, help me to walk by the Spirit and not by the flesh. Teach me and lead me that I will not slip hereafter. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.*_

_*FEAR NOT! GOD IS WITH YOU!!*_

_*"Even though I walk through the valley of shadow of death, I will fear no evil, ..." (Psalm 23:4)*_

_*In the story of Pilgrim's Progress, the hero, Christian comes to the valley of shadow of death. He describes it as a lonely place where no one else can understand what a person is experiencing. It is a valley of deep darkness, terror and demonic oppression. John Bunyan, the author of the book himself had experienced this valley of shadow of death in his life. He had twelve year imprisonment for Christ's sake when he was in his thirties and had four young children. He was tormented with thoughts of death during this time, and also he was assaulted by wicked satanic thoughts. Though he was a godly man, who knew the Scriptures well, he had to go through these times of deep darkness. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself was tempted by the evil one when He was in the wilderness, and then later in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was surrounded by deep darkness. Dear friends, it is inevitable for every child of God to pass through this valley of death atleast once in his/her lifetime. It may be depression, health problems, rejection, or loss of financial stability and security. But we don't have to fear the evil, the pain and the suffering because our Great Shepherd is with us during such an overwhelming period. His presence will comfort us and carry us through. He says, "Fear not; for I am with you". (Isaiah 41:10) He becomes more personal to us during these times. And when we come out of these circumstances, we come out as gold, strong in faith and pure in godliness. So, let us pass through the valley with confidence that the Lord is with us at such times.*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for being with me in times of hopelessness. You are my Great Shepherd and so I fear no evil, no pain and no suffering, as I am in Your presence that gives me hope and joy. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen*_

_*FORGIVE! ALSO FORGET!!*_

_*“... Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood.” (1 Kings 2:9)*_

_*When David along with his men were fleeing away from Absalom, he met a man called Shimei on his way. This man cursed David and his officials, pelted them with stones and showered them with dirt. He shouted at the top of his voice and brought disgrace to David in front of all his people. Seeing this unlawful activity, one of David’s officials Abishai, wanted to cut off Shimei’s head on David’s permission. But David refused to permit him. Instead he said, “It may be that the Lord will repay me good for the cursing I am receiving today. Later, after many years, when David became old and was in his death bed, we read that he forgave Shimei at that moment, but he could not forget his treacherous act. While handing over the kingdom to his son Solomon, he reminded him of Shimei and commanded him to kill him after becoming king. Though David was a godly man, who was considered as a man after God’s own heart, (Acts 13:22) he was also weak in flesh and at times yielded to the temptation of the devil. Dear friends, when people mistreat us and hurl insults upon us for none of our mistakes, we become furious. We too, like David, somehow want to take revenge on them. We wait for an exact opportunity to give them back for what they have done to us. But let us look at our perfect example - the Lord Jesus! When He was standing before a group of people who condemned Him and gave false report against Him, He did not open His mouth. Instead, He forgave all of them and also pleaded with the Father for them, saying “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.” Let us have that forgiving attitude of Christ in us.*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, often I want to forgive others. But, after sometime I find that I tend to remember what they have done to me. Let my forgiveness be full and complete, just as Christ forgave me. In Jesus’ most precious name I pray. Amen.*_

_*FROM PIT TO PINNACLE OF GLORY !*_

_*"They took him and threw him into the cistern." (Genesis 37:24)*_

_*We are greatly encouraged by the life of Joseph, who passed through various unimaginable situations in his life. To begin with, he was the favorite son of his father, Jacob. He enjoyed the best in his father's household. But his joy was short lived. He was thrown into a pit by his own brothers who were jealous of him. Joseph's heart must have been shattered when he was abandoned and rejected by his own brothers. Next, Joseph gained entry into the house of Potiphar- an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard. Seeing his good conduct, Potiphar exalted him to the highest rank. But even this pleasure was short lived. Soon Joseph found his dwelling place in the prison. He was facing loneliness and great pain for two full years. Then came the exaltation once again! Joseph revealed the hidden meaning of the Pharaoh's dream. Since Pharaoh greatly marveled at Joseph's intelligence and diligence, he made him in charge of the whole land of Egypt. He also gave his signet ring - denoting his authority. He was lifted to such a high status that his brothers who rejected him once, came back to him and fell down at his feet to get his favor! Dear friends, are all your hopes and dreams shattered, and do you feel that you are rejected and abandoned? Is there no hope for your future? Be encouraged today. Sometimes the Lord may allow you to pass through severe trials to break you but it is all for your good. Don't doubt Him or turn away from Him during such situations. If you submit to Him, He will mould you and exalt you in the eyes of the very same people who treated you with contempt. Experiences of solitary confinement and rejection will only hasten our climb in the ladder of success. Amen.*_

_*PRAYER: Lord, thank You for recording many encouraging events in the Bible. Thank You for rekindling the dying hope in me today. Help me to submit and endure that I may attain the pinnacle of glory sooner. In Jesus’ most precious name I pray. Amen.*_

_*GET RID OF LAZINESS*_

_*"Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!" (Proverbs 6:6)*_

_*It is observed that getting up early from the bed motivates a person throughout the day to remain brisk. Health experts advise their patients to do simple exercises in the morning in order to rejuvenate every organ of their bodies. While this is so with regard to the worldly aspect of life, spiritually the Bible exhorts us to get up from our beds early in the morning and seek the Lord. In Psalm 119:147 the psalmist says, "I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in Your word", and in Proverbs 8:17, Solomon says, "... those who seek the Lord early will find Him!" In John 20:1 we read that Mary Magdalene went to the tomb of Jesus, while it was still dark, which was very early in the morning and she had the great privilege of seeing the Risen Savior first. We also read that Jesus Christ while He was on this earth, got up very early in the morning and went to solitary places to pray to His Heavenly Father. Dear friends, we find around us people of other faiths getting up early in the morning to perform their daily rituals to their 'gods’. So, why not we, the children of the living God, shirk off our laziness and fall upon our knees before our Creator each day? See how Solomon gives us the example of ants. They do not have a commander, or overseer, or ruler. Yet they are always busy in their work. So let us not be lethargic in our religious and mundane activities. Whether it is praying or evangelizing or doing our chores, let us be brisk and graciously make use of every opportunity that is given to us, to work for His glory.*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, many a time though I desire to get up early and sit at Your feet, lethargy takes over and makes me sleep a 'little more'. Give me grace to shirk off laziness and be brisk and active with Your power. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.*_

_*THE DEBT OF LOVE REMAINS!*_

_*"Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, ..." (Romans 13:8)*_

_*It is hard to see anyone without debts these days. There are so many "easy repayment schemes” available which tempt even a strong minded person to become a debtor. To live a "debtfree life is a gift from God. In Deuteronomy 28:12, the Lord blesses the Israelites saying, "You will lend to many nations, but will borrow from none!" The world talks of debtors only with regard to money matters, but the Bible talks about four types of debtors. In Romans 1:14, Paul says that if we do not preach the gospel, we are debtors. In I Corinthians 9:16, he says, "Woe to me, if I do not preach the gospel." Secondly, in Romans 8:12, Paul says, "We are debtors not to the flesh." By that he means that we are debtors to the Holy Spirit. If we live in the sins of the flesh, we will die. But if we put to death the practices of the flesh, then we shall live by the Spirit. (vs13) Thirdly, in Romans 13:8, we read that, "Owe no man anything, but to love one another." If we do not love others, we become debtors. The greatest commandment of our Lord Jesus Christ is, "Love one another." Fourthly, in Romans 15:27, we read that we are indebted to those who feed us spiritually. Paul asked the believers of Macedonia and Achaia to make some contributions to the poor saints since they had enjoyed spiritual blessings from them. It was their duty to bless them carnally! Dear friends, let us not be debtors in any of the above areas. Let us be prudent in spending money. Let us strive to atleast lead one soul to the Lord. Let us not be debtors to the flesh, and let us bless the servants of God liberally by the fruit of our labor.*_

_*PRAYER: Lord, as I bask in Your love, help me to be indebted to the cause of gospel, to the power of the Spirit, to the law of love, and to my spiritual mentors. Let me show this indebtedness in my actions. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.*_

_*SUFFERING 'CHRISTLIKE'!*_

_*"... In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)*_

_*Only in John's gospel do we read in detail how Jesus opened up His heart to His disciples before He was crucified, and how how he prayed for them to the Father. Though Jesus lived with them for just three and a half years, He showed them the full extent of His love during His last days. He knew how they would feel forsaken after His glorification, and so He comforted them as a mother would comfort her children. He also cautioned them that they would be hated by the world, and they would be persecuted on account of Him. But He encouraged them that their grief will be turned to joy. After Jesus' ascension, the disciples went into the world and preached the gospel to all the nations. We come to know from history that all of them died as martyrs, true to what Jesus said. But how great is their reward in heaven! Dear friends, are you undergoing suffering in various ways, for your faith in Christ Jesus? Are you disowned by your own kith and kin? In Luke 21:16 Jesus says, "You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death." You may even be denied of your rights. Do not lose heart. "The end of all things is near." (I Peter 4:7) Do not shun the suffering for Christ's sake. “The God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast." (1 Peter 5:10) As Jesus said, "By standing firm you will gain life." (Luke 21:19)*_

_*PRAYER: Lord, when this world hates me for my faith, You surround me with Your love. I seek the power of the Holy Spirit to endure suffering for Your dear name's sake that I may inherit the crown later. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.*_

_*DON'T STRESS OUT! SEEK REST!!*_

_*"Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, ..." (Exodus 23:12)*_

_*When we ask about their work situation to any sincere worker in any field, be it educational, financial, medical or engineering, we get a reply, "The workload is too much. We are squeezed beyond limit." Because of over work, we get so often tired and exhausted. The fog of fatigue clouds our everyday life. No matter how much we are willing to work, there seems to be a competitor who is willing to work more. Wives working outside home return to find a second shift of household work waiting for them. Husbands add overtime to their busy schedule. Single parents stretch themselves beyond measure that they feel they are reaching heights of frustration. All of us need rest and renewal that come from God. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus offers us Himself, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." God also offers us a Sabbath, a weekly day of rest that helps us to rejuvenate our tired cells back to health. Even the Almighty God, after creating this earth and everything in it rested on the seventh day. He even included this as one of the commandments which He gave. During the days of Moses, anyone who trespass this commandment would be put to death as we read in today's text. Dear friends, our bodies are designed by our Creator God to effectively function through a period, after which a compulsory rest is required to keep us fit and healthy. Let us not be workaholics. Let us set aside time to take adequate rest and to spend quality time with our families and the Lord. Let us observe Sunday as a holy day and not a stressed out day!*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, in this busily scheduled lifestyle, help me to take a break once a week, to spend time with my family and with You. Let me not break my neck being a workaholic 24/7. In Jesus' most precious name I pray. Amen.*_

_*FINE TUNE YOUR GIVING!*_

_*"... They gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability." (II Corinthians 8:3)*_

_*Years ago, 'The chaplain magazine' wrote how the noted preacher Charles Spurgeon and his wife were called miserly because they sold all the eggs their chicken laid and would not give them away. Even close relatives were told, "You may have them if you pay for them." Rumors circulated that they were greedy and grasping. The Spurgeons however took the criticisms graciously without defending themselves and only after the death of Mrs. Spurgeon was the full story revealed. The records showed that their entire profits had been used to support two needy and elderly widows. Giving is a special grace of God. In today's text we read that Macedonian Churches gave with overflowing joy and generously even in their extreme poverty. It is amazing to read that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their capacity. Giving is a divine character. Almighty God has given us everything we need, including His only Son for our salvation. Jesus Christ gave Himself on the Cross for us. The Holy Spirit has given us His precious gifts, to magnify His name. And so, we as the children of the Triune God are encouraged to give generously to those in need. Dear friends, let us not give lame excuses that we are not wealthy enough to give, or say that others not worthy to receive. Let us take the example of the Spurgeons and the Macedonian Churches who gave liberally even in their poverty. Let us excel in our giving rather than getting from others. Then we will be made rich in every way and we will be generous in every occasion.*_

_*PRAYER: Dear Lord, I thank You for all that You have given me. Make my heart generous that I may give liberally to the cause of the gospel and to the needy, and be made rich in glory than here on this earth. Thank You. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.*_
