The UN continues to support freedom of expression and responsible journalism in Iraq.

Peace begins with truth.

Access to reliable, verified information is not optional. It is fundamental to building peaceful, just and resilient societies.

Yet today, this foundation is under strain. Freedom of expression has declined by 10% globally since 2012. Self-censorship for journalists has surged by 63%, as they increasingly avoid reporting on corruption, human rights and environmental issues. At the same time, impunity for crimes against journalists remains at 85%.

When information is manipulated, it fuels division and weakens trust. When it is free and truthful, it strengthens accountability, dialogue and human rights.

On World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO calls for renewed commitment to protect freedom of expression and support journalism as a pillar of peace.

UN Resident Coordinator for Iraq, Ghulam M. Isaczai, convened the Development Partners' Forum at the UN Office in Baghdad.
The meeting was briefed by former Prime Minister’s Advisor HE Mohamed Al-Darraji and brought together members of diplomatic community, UN agencies and NGO representatives.
Participants exchanged views on current developments in the region and their impact on socioeconomic outlook and fiscal sustainability in Iraq. They also discussed efforts to strengthen coordination across development and humanitarian priorities in Iraq.

UN Resident Coordinator in Iraq, Ghulam M. Isaczai, met today with Acting Minister of Planning H.E. Dr. Khaled Battal to discuss implementation of the Cooperation Framework , including governance structures and financing mechanisms. Discussions also covered UN support to Iraq’s economic diversification and fiscal sustainability, with both sides underscoring the importance of stronger private sector engagement to advance national development priorities.

التقى المنسق المقيم للأمم المتحدة في العراق، غلام محمد إسحق زي، اليوم مع معالي وزير التخطيط وكالة، الأستاذ الدكتور خالد بتّال، حيث جرى بحث سبل تعزيز التعاون في تنفيذ إطار التعاون للتنمية المستدامة ( ) للأعوام (2025–2029)، بما يشمل هيكل الحوكمة وآليات التمويل.

كما تناول اللقاء دعم الأمم المتحدة لجهود العراق في تنويع الاقتصاد وتعزيز الاستدامة المالية، مع التأكيد على أهمية توسيع دور القطاع الخاص كشريك أساسي في تحقيق أولويات التنمية الوطنية.
