Our Story: From Eyes to IDPs: How we evolved from specialist eye hospital to first medical responder and general hospital
Swedish Specialist Hospital has been in the healthcare sector since April 2012. While having been an established and innovative private hospital with an excellent track record for exceptional levels of patient satisfaction, it was established after General Manager, Dr Lokman Atroshi, after living in Sweden for many years, returned to Kurdistan with a vision to provide the region with a facility which had the same standards of healthcare available in Europe.
However, after just 2 brief years of being fully operational, the hospital faced it’s darkest hour. The ISIS conflict of 2013 brought many challenges, but the staff were adamant and after the first IDPs starting to flee Shengal Mountain, the hospital became the first medical responders on the scene. Supplies and medication were were driven to the camps, and Dr Lokman and his staff attended to the sick and wounded. As a result of this initiative, an award winning documentary titled, “The Return” was produced, featuring the work of the staff among the camps. To date, the hospital itself has undergone a transformation from specialist eye hospital to specialised/generalist hospital, with over 20 departments, as well as visiting eminent surgeons from Sweden, Iran, and The U.S.
Swedish Specialist Hospital continues to excel in offering both local and international patients and clients a superior level of quality healthcare and services, as well as honouring their commitment to humanitarian efforts within Kurdistan.
