Had such an awesome time this weekend exploring Zion and Paria Canyon with a group of rad and fast women. It was either steep or toasty but it’s always more fun to suffer together 😬😅 I truly believe iron sharpens iron, surrounding yourself with strong, positive, and driven people can only make one a better human and athlete. Hope we can have more adventures in the future !

I remember my parents having me hand write thank you notes growing up - and I didn’t fully appreciate the value at the time, but it’s been ages I wrote and sent something by hand. I’ve written my journals and most correspondence on the computer for years now, and hand writing notes to y’all made me a little nostalgic for old fashioned letters.

Finally, the book is ready.

After Mosul, I needed a way to process the emotional and moral reckoning I went through, and wanted a tangible place for the images of the spaces and places that held so much tension and loss. Thus, this photo book, The Jaw Still Speaking.

Huge thanks to Joshua David Watson and Peter David Gross for their hard work, creativity, and patience in the design process, and for putting so much of their heart into something that meant a lot to me, to Carol Guzy for the lovely afterword, and to everyone who gave guidance and advice on the way.

Thank you to everyone who pre-ordered, your copies will be shipped shortly!

All of what’s happening has been completely unexpected to all of us. In a way, it’s brought the world together in ways I’d never imagined. It’s made me so humble, to be able to work with such an amazing emergency department staff. We are tired, drained and unsure of everyday that comes, but we are in it together and I couldn’t be more grateful to be fighting this fight with such a supportive community. When COVID started, I didn’t see my family for awhile. We’ve FaceTimed frequently, but it’s not the same.

For those who stayed on after curfew, a few hundred remained at the steps while Governor Raimondo spoke. They made their way through the city, the police at each stop along the route. Despite a minor scuffle, it remained peaceful. Around midnight, the protestors and police marched together back to Kennedy Plaza

Providence was full of light. I’ve seen previous little of lively gatherings in this city, having arrived at the edge of winter that spilled over into COVID isolation. Seeing a large and diverse crowd making their voice heard was life giving. Close to curfew, many of the protesters dispersed, a number of them stopping halfway down the block to play music and dance. Those who remained, began to chant “We’re not leaving” as curfew drew near.

The protest in Providence last night drew an estimated 10,000 people, marching from Kennedy Plaza to the State House. Once there the crowd gathered on and around the steps, listening to speeches from local activists and community leaders, calling for justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and numerous other unarmed Black citizens killed by police. The crowd remained peaceful, dwindling down to a few hundred people close to the 9pm curfew. For those who stayed, they marched back downtown, into Federal Hill, and eventually, the police and protesters marched back to where they started. Other than a couple arrests around midnight for disorderly conduct, the entire event was an enormous, energetic, peaceful call for justice and reform.

Finally something other than Corona, shot long before the virus began to take a toll here, and so happy to see it in print!

In February, Mother Jones sent me to Huron, SD, a small town three hours west of my small town in MN. In the last decade, Huron has experienced growth rather than decline in unexpected ways - from a growing influx of Karen workers and other immigrants.

This great piece by Noah Lanard illustrates how a largely homogenous rural town embraced diversity for the sake of the community and it’s future. Thanks to Mark Murrmann for the assignment! Check out the May/June print issue for the whole story.

The lake cabin looks very different covered in snow. Only five miles from our house, our tiny one bedroom cabin on Fish Lake holds a special place in my heart. We spent nearly every day of the summer there growing up: catching frogs in the creek, playing in the woods with the collapsed house where we thought witches lived, building treehouses at the point, water skiing, and generally driving my parents and grandparents crazy.

If any of y’all are passing through SW MN you’re welcome to come stay 😊
