Italy has made headlines by introducing groundbreaking changes to its pet travel policies, setting a new standard in global aviation. The country’s civil aviation authority, ENAC, has updated its regulations to permit medium and large dogs—those weighing over 10 kilograms (22 pounds)—to fly alongside their owners in the passenger cabin.
This is a monumental shift from the old rule that required larger dogs to be transported in the aircraft’s cargo hold. To qualify, pets must be securely placed in ENAC-approved carriers that do not obstruct aisles or emergency exits, ensuring safety for all onboard.
This move is largely driven by concerns for animal welfare, recognizing that cargo travel can be extremely stressful and even risky for pets. Allowing dogs to remain close to their humans helps minimize anxiety and potential health risks.
While many pet owners are celebrating this more compassionate approach, some passengers have raised concerns about allergies, hygiene, and possible disturbances during flights. Importantly, individual airlines retain the right to accept or deny dogs in the cabin, so travelers are encouraged to verify each airline’s policy before making travel plans. Overall, this change reflects a growing trend of treating pets as valued family members.
