🌞 Buon Ferragosto from Bella Italia Genealogy! 🇮🇹

Today, Italy celebrates Ferragosto, one of the country’s oldest and most beloved summer traditions. Dating back to ancient Rome, it was once a holiday introduced by Emperor Augustus to give workers and animals a well-earned rest after the harvest. Over time, it also became a Catholic feast day for the Assumption of Mary.

Now, Ferragosto is all about sunshine, beaches, mountains, family feasts, and taking a real pause to enjoy the heart of summer. Across Italy, you’ll find towns filled with music, fireworks, and long lunches that stretch into the evening.

🇮🇹 Important Win for Citizenship by Descent! 🇮🇹

On July 31, 2025, Italy’s Constitutional Court ruled on a case originating from Bologna, reaffirming a key principle: an eligible descendant of an Italian citizen is born with the right to citizenship by blood (jure sanguinis). 👏

While this case did not directly address the new laws introduced in March, the ruling sends a powerful and positive message. It reflects the Court’s understanding that Italian citizenship is a right by blood, something you are born with, not a privilege to be granted or denied.

This is a meaningful and hopeful signal as legal challenges to the new restrictions move forward. It reinforces the idea that citizenship by descent is a constitutional right, and gives strength to those who are still fighting for recognition.
