"The educational purposes are to dissect the mechanisms that modulate gut barrier integrity, which can be affected by intrinsic and extrinsic factors and can lead to translocation of microbial components into the body, producing systemic, low-grade inflammation. While the association between gut barrier integrity and inflammation in intestinal disease is well established, new evidence suggests that the barrier and microbiota may contribute to the development of metabolic, autoimmune, and aging-related disorders. Emerging interventions to improve gut barrier integrity and microbiota composition become crucial to restore homeostasis."

Dr. Santos is originally from Spain and lives in Barcelona. He is able to balance his work in research with various interests and hobbies, such as urban horticulture, sports, astronomy, soccer and food.
At his lecture will focus on “the -gut axis, which is increasingly relevant for the understanding and treating of patients with functional , particularly those with more severe symptoms, who often have different comorbidities, such as mental disorders, , chronic and other chronic ”. In his talk he will address the methods and objectives of the European projects, focused on the study of this axis in patients with , with or without ."
In his talk he intends to make clear the need to understand the role of the -gut-microbiota in the origin and development of comorbidities and to address new and therapeutic approaches in the most complex patients.
