Each day our path need to adapt to a new landscape.
Even mountains change all the time.
This led J.M.W Turner to paint the same mountain multiple times at different times of the day, exploring it all the way around (The Three Rigis). The same mountain, but different paintings.
As Turner, when looking at our clients from a movement and/or biopsychosocial perspective, perhaps we could adopt a broader perspective.
We suggest not just stand in front of them, maybe move around as if you were in a gallery, observing that piece of art from all different angles. You might be able to observe things and find different opportunities in what you can do .
Similarly, don't limit yourself looking at the painful shoulder or their painful back. Look at the person from a broader view, exploring all the multiple factors that can possibly affect their presentation: work, family, finances, poor physical activity, depression..
We think that lifestyle behavior changes are one of the most powerful avenues we have for aches and pains and probably are much more important than how strong or flexible we can get somebody.
It certainly isn't an easy path to take. For this reason, wrote a book to be able to storytell the good and the bad of stress physiology to our patients and possibly open up discussions around lifestyle and behavior change strategies.
Stand on the mountain, take your time, and taste the movement.
