A Superconductive Day in La Spezia ⚡🇮🇹
A day dedicated to superconductivity took place in La Spezia, where ASG Superconductors, the Ligurian company owned by the Malacalza family, showcased some of Italy's world-class technologies as part of the Made in Italy Day promoted by MIMIT minister. The event was held first at the Confindustria headquarters in La Spezia, and later continued with a visit to the company's plant, welcoming guests from various industries and groups of students.
The ASG Chief Technology office Giovanni Grasso provided an insightful overview of the evolution of superconducting materials and technologies. A hundred years after the discovery of superconductivity, these innovations have now reached operating temperatures suitable not only for nuclear fusion or scientific research, but also for energy transmission with zero loss. For instance, he introduced innovative superconducting cables with a reduced footprint, capable of transmitting significantly more power in less space than traditional technologies.
Meanwhile, Stefano Pittaluga sales manager at ASG and expert in resonance and ultra-high-field magnets, presented cutting-edge open MRI systems that work without rare earth materials or liquid helium, as well as new cancer treatment technologies. These systems, made possible by superconductivity, are currently being tested in Germany at the University of Dresden in collaboration with OncoRay - National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology .
