Some experiences leave a lasting mark, not only for the knowledge shared, but for the people, ideas, and conversations they bring together.

The 4th edition of MRI & Ultrasound in Veterinary Medicine has come to a close in Sicily, after two days dedicated to advanced imaging, clinical exchange, and hands-on learning within the international veterinary community.

From MRI insights into complex neurological conditions to abdominal, vascular, interventional, and cardiac ultrasound, the programme brought together international experts and veterinary professionals to explore how innovation can support more informed diagnosis and better animal care.

Fostering moments like this means contributing to a culture of continuous education: creating space for dialogue, collaboration, and even a bit of fun.

A hearthful thank you to all the speakers and participants who made this edition so valuable.
The journey of learning continues.

What advice would you give to clinics looking to enhance or expand their diagnostic imaging capabilities?

According to Dr. Dieter Malleczek, Veterinary Surgeon at Blue Oasis Veterinary Clinic in Dubai (UAE), expanding diagnostic imaging capabilities is a gradual clinical journey built on solid and reliable foundations.

In small animal practice, X-ray and ultrasound remain essential tools, providing the first level of insight needed to support many clinical decisions.

From there, progress comes through a continuous balance between technology and expertise: better equipment, dedicated training, and experience developed through daily practice.

This step-by-step approach enables clinics to evolve with confidence toward more advanced diagnostic modalities, such as MRI.

Veterinary medicine is defined by extraordinary clinical variety.

From companion animals to the complex anatomies of exotic species, every patient requires a level of precision that only solutions specifically designed for the veterinary environment can provide. When solutions are purpose-built, they enhance clinical decision-making, becoming a natural extension of the veterinarian’s expertise.

Modular interfaces, AI-powered tools, and rapid access to advanced modes contribute to strengthening diagnostic confidence, enabling clinicians to approach even the most complex examinations with greater clarity.

Our goal is to support outstanding care for every animal, regardless of species or size, because every life deserves uncompromising precision.

Do you believe that integrating MRI, ultrasound, and CT could become the standard approach for managing complex orthopedic cases?

In our latest interview, Dr. Kurt Selberg, MS, DVM, DACVR, explores why a multimodality approach is often the actual standard of care when investigating equine musculoskeletal injuries. While ultrasound is is often the first-line imaging tool, it may not always fully characterize the complexity of every lesion.

Dr. Selberg highlights how advanced imaging modalities such as MRI and CT allow clinicians to move beyond uncertainty. By leveraging the unique strengths and addressing the specific weaknesses of each technique, practitioners can “funnel” various clinical findings into a single, definitive diagnosis.

This diagnostic synergy is key to developing targeted treatment plans, providing the necessary clarity to manage complex cases and ultimately ensuring a safe and effective return to work for the horse.

Enhance your small animal diagnostic practice with a dedicated session on interventional ultrasound in dogs and cats.

This webinar provides an evidence-based overview of the clinical advantages and essential precautions associated with fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and ultrasound-guided biopsy, with a focus on techniques to optimize diagnostic yields and safety in daily practice.

The session will be presented by Prof. Tiziana Liuti, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ECVDI, Pg.CAP, FHEA, FRSB, FRCVS, an internationally recognized specialist with extensive expertise in advanced diagnostic imaging and professional veterinary education. Prof. Liuti will address when these procedures are most valuable, how to perform them effectively, and the diagnostic benefits they provide.

Exploring diagnostic insights from echocardiography.

Last week, we had the pleasure to contribute to the Scientific program of the VIII Symposium “Health Care and Reproduction of ungulates, poultry and carnivores” in Belgrade, organized by Serbian Association of Veterinary Practitioners (SAVP).

Under the guidance of Dr. Maria Raquel Moreno Carbonero, DVM, Resident ECVIM-CA (Cardiology) - Clinica Veterinaria Gran Sasso, we explored the diagnostic value of echocardiography, focusing on real-life clinical cases. The session covered two topics:

- Pulmonary stenosis type A in a French bulldog
- Canine dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype

The program also included dedicated hands-on sessions, giving participants the opportunity to build confidence in applying advanced imaging techniques to everyday clinical decision-making.

We believe that continuous education is essential for delivering better and more informed veterinary care.

How would you describe the role of image fusion in modern diagnostics, and how does it actually work?

According to Dr. Federica Rossi, DVM, SRV, Dipl. ECVDI, the answer lies in the precise synchronization of different diagnostic modalities.

In this interview, she explains how AI-driven fusion works: from CT dataset loading to real-time US–CT synchronization, enabling clinicians to navigate the patient’s anatomy with a level of clarity that individual modalities cannot achieve on their own. This is particularly valuable for identifying and targeting lesions.

Integrating advanced imaging techniques enhances diagnostic confidence and precision, translating complex data into clinical decision and better patient care.

Optimized technology for advanced veterinary MRI diagnostics

Installing an MRI system is only the first step.
For Massimo Baroni DVM, Dipl. ECVN, Head of Neurology Service at Valdinievole Veterinary Clinic, the real difference lies not in field strength alone, but in how effectively a 1.5T platform is optimized for veterinary clinical practice.

After more than 6,000 MRI examinations performed, Dr. Baroni explains how continuous optimization in collaboration with engineers and physicists has helped achieve high-quality imaging for brain disorders and other veterinary applications.

Daily optimization, multidisciplinary collaboration, and experience make technology truly impactful.

Which diagnostic imaging applications do you primarily focus on in your practice?

Dr. Dieter Malleczek, Veterinary Surgeon at Blue Oasis Veterinary Clinic in Dubai (UAE), shares how integrating advanced imaging modalities can turn complex cases into accurate diagnoses, ensuring high standards even in the most demanding clinical scenarios.

From X-ray imaging to specialized ultrasound, these are among the most common modalities. But when complexity increases, particularly in neurological cases or when structures are not accessible via ultrasound or X-ray, MRI becomes the gold standard, especially for assessing the brain and spinal cord.

Choosing the right modality at the right time makes all the difference in animal care.
