KALARI LAB EUROPE (opening May 2023)

RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE IN SOUTH ITALY

I am very excited to announce the opening of the first traditional pit Kalari in Europe! Kalari Lab has teamed up with Yav Centro Yogayurvedico in Puglia, South Italy under the leadership of Massimo Yav Capuano and with the collaboration of Gurukkal CM Sherif and his sons Gurukkal Zameel and Gurukkal Shahabas, to create the centre of training, treatment and research into the martial and healing art of Kalarippayat!

Over the next years we shall be running intensive retreats, providing and teaching Kalari Chikitsa treatment and beginning a research project: to excavate the essence of Kalari and provide a sound evidential base for the practice.

Current trends in Kalari are focusing on the acrobatic and performative aspects of the art - in our opinion a narrow and fruitless endeavour - instead we shall pursue a path of rigorous research and through this, bring the scientific method that it is Kalari into the modern world of sports science and rehabilitation.

Along with the traditional earth-floored pit Kalari, we shall be creating a centre for Panchakarma treatment and in time cooking and exporting our own Ayurvedic oils and medicines.

This is a very exciting time for Kalari and particularly for Kalari in Europe.

The work begins with a 30 day deep immersion into the art beginning on May 1st this year and we still have a few places available.

Please check out this link for all information and feel free to message us to learn more.

Kalari is arguably the root of all Asian Martial Arts, with its roots in ancient tribal practices at least 5000 years old as well as ties to Siddha healing and Ayurvedic medicine. It is high time the world comes to see the essential truth and scientific validity of this practice.

Kalari Lab , together with its collaborators in Puglia and Kerala are working tirelessly to bring this about!

See you in Puglia!

Kalari REVEALED | Hidden Fighting Applications (Part 1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPaO5ugxR_U

Today we begin something I am very excited to share with you all. In this new series 'Kalari REVEALED' we shall be looking at the secret and hidden martial applications inside the forms and movements of Kalarippayattu.

Southern Style / Adi Murai / Varma Ati - as is practised in Southern Kerala, contains many martial techniques which are fairly obvious to see in the practice. In Northern and Central style however, these applications are far more mysterious.

In actual fact, as a student, the application is not usually taught. Instead the student practices the techniques again and again, until they become 2nd nature and deeply embedded in the body's muscle memory.

Then, should it be required to use them in a conflict situation, these movement patterns are so easily repeated, that they are essentially effortless.

Part 1: Secrets of the LOHARS

Today then we shall examine 2 techniques taken from the Lohars exercises of Central style Kalarippayattu. The fIrst of these is used to defend against an opponent coming at you from behind; the 2nd for when the opponent is in front of you.

PLEASE REMEMBER - KALARI IS ONLY EVER TO BE USED IN SELF-DEFENCE - IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO AVOID THE FIGHT IF YOU CAN.

Please take care if practising these techniques and use a crash-mat or mattress as we have done. Falling onto the floor directly can cause irreparable damage - especially to the Coccyx (tail-bone) as shown in the exercises today.

Hi guys

Long time no speak!

Hope you are all well and getting stuff done. I have been off my feet the last few weeks with an injury but getting much better now.

Wanted to share with you how things are progressing.

We have shifted focus to YouTube, where we now have almost 10k subscribers.

We are now uploading all our training videos on there, for those who JOIN the channel. This means 96 lessons all around 45 minutes long. A full 12 month program.

This shift in platforms (though we are still hosting on teachable as before), is about making the course available to more people and at a lower price per month.

The cost per month is $9.99 or $29.99 if you want to be a premium member and support our current and future filming.

Once we reach 10k subscribers on YouTube we shall be able to use the stories feature and hope to use this to grow the school more.

Thanks for your support and interest and I wish you all luck in your current and future projects.

Here is the link to join the YouTube channel, please subscribe and join of it suits you.

This is the second part of our mini-series on the (Vadivu) of Kalarippayattu.

We examine the methods and reasoning behind the Horse posture, or what the Malayalees call Ashwa Vadivu.

This is the most effective posture for lengthening the muscles which run down the side of the body - what is called the Lateral Myofascial Line.

The Lateral Line contains some of the muscles most prone to shortening - especially if you have a habit of sitting for prolonged periods of time or if you have some difficulties/tightness in the muscles of the neck.

The effect of the posture is not only to switch on and tone this muscular line but also to 'stabilise' the ankle, knee and hip joints and to align the pelvis - this is an essential prerequisite, before advancing onto more dynamic postures and movement sequences.

The effect of this posture is to increase the water element of the body thereby increasing fluidity of movement (and thought).

To start with, please try holding the pose for just 3 breaths on each side and then gradually build it up.

POINTS TO NOTE:
1 - Keep the back foot turned out NO MORE than 30 degrees or you will overstrain the knee joint.
2 - Keep the back leg extended as this will ensure the lateral line is properly stretched.
3 - DO not step too far forward - the knee should be directly above the ankle.

GOOD LUCK!

Don't forget to check out https://Kalarilab.org for the full training program, starting at just $1 for the first 4 lessons.

Gajavadivu is one of the foundation postures of Kalari. It is essentially a modified squat. Through lifting the pelvis back and up, whilst at the same lifting the chest up and forward, the core muscles of the body are engaged, from the big toe to the chewing muscles of the jaw; this is your muscular core - your deep front line.

It is important to keep the knees open and the feet as parallel as possible. As you look down at your feet you should see your knees directly above your ankles.

Do not try and do the posture too deep at first. Step by step ...

I always wanted to make kalari more popular and available to people.

I do believe it offers more than yoga, in many ways and gives us a focused state of body and mind.

Now the corona story has affected all of us, a very challenging time. I am trying to make the best of it and to move forward.

The online course I've been planning for so long is now available at kalarilab.org

I wanted to make it affordable for my students all over the world, so all the basics are available for free, then you can start a silver course for just $1.

And there is a special golden pass for those who want to go deep in their practice!

Thank you all guys for your support.

Will appreciate any feed back on my online lessons.

Ballistic stretching is used a lot in Kalari, particularly in the KALUGAL (leg swings). Here the hip joint is brought first into extension and then released into flexion. It is done in such a way as to swing the leg high into the air and when practises regularly, this leads to significant gains in flexibility.

The essence of Ballistic stretching, is to use momentum and/or gravity to swing the joint beyond the usual range. It is as though the stretch receptors (which normally hold back the muscle from lengthening) are tricked or by-passed.

Now there is both evidence for and against this type of stretching. The main concern is damage to the joint capsule and the tendons that can occur if the exercises are done too forcefully. It is VERY IMPORTANT THEREFORE to do the Kalugal gently and only gradually add power, once the joint is released.

Note: Please always accompany stretching with stabilising exercises to prevent subluxation of the joint.

Our spine is the result of millions of years of evolution. The perfect balance between rigidity and mobility, to allow freedom of movement whilst protecting the fragile structures within.

Intrinsic Equilibrium is the spine's ability to bring itself back to straight. It is the result of several mechanisms taking place between the vertebra and the structures that connect them and it is effortless! That means no energy is required.

It is free movement!

What is Kalari ?

Kalari is both a Martial Art and Yoga practice, beyond that, it is also a system of treatment and manual therapy, essentially the 5000 year old sister science to Ayurveda, originating in South India and embedded in a living Martial Arts tradition.

Practice of Kalari leads to significant changes in physical attributes (flexibility, flow, power, grace) as well as psychological attributes (confidence, grounding and focus).

Kalari contains an extensive and thorough knowledge of the body and its psycho-physical processes; a structured and progressive system of total body conditioning both in terms of training and treatment.
