Clare is a mum to 5 year old Sam, who is allergic to dairy and egg. Unfortunately, Sam has experienced multiple allergic reactions while eating out. Clare always carefully plans and communicates about Sam’s food allergy when eating out, and is a self-described “control freak” (as many parents of children with food allergy need to be when it comes to food) – to try and cover all the bases and reduce the risk of Sam having an allergic reaction.

Clare finds eating out stressful but still tries to eat out with Sam to give the family, including his siblings, a normal experience and ability to socialise. Having experienced reactions even at trusted venues, Clare knows the importance of checking every detail, every time, even though you might think you're in a safe space.

Her message is clear - When eating out, Always Ask, Always Tell. 💙

Our third 2024 Respiratory Achievers Awards winner is Charleigh Skelton-Morris who won the Asthma (5 - 12 years old) Award.

The 12-year-old has just popped and locked her way into the Hip Hop World Championships, a huge achievement given her ongoing battle with severe asthma.

Today is World Smokefree Day. Being smoke and v**e-free is the best thing you can do for your own respiratory health and the respiratory health of your whānau. The theme for World Smokefree Day 2023 is ‘We’re Backing You’. Quitting is a team effort. If you know someone who is on their quitting journey, here are some things you can do to support them:

✅Join them: If you are a smoker or v**er, consider joining them on their journey - doing it together can make it easier
✅Ask them: How do they want to be supported – regular check-ins, encouragement, someone to go walking with? Make sure you are giving them the support they need.
✅Keep it positive: remind them of all the reasons to not smoke or v**e - more money, healthier lungs, healthier living environment, more energy etc.
✅Be encouraging: slip-ups are normal and it's important to keep trying.
✅Learn more: find out more about the quitting journey, ni****ne withdrawals and cravings so you can understand what they are going through.
