1. Elizabeth Anne Holmes founded and was the chief executive officer (CEO) of Theranos, a now-defunct health technology company that soared in valuation after the company claimed to have revolutionized blood testing by developing methods that could use surprisingly small volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick.
2. The Italian Medicines Agency gave the green light to two antivirals, Molnupiravir and Remdesivir, for the treatment of non-hospitalized patients, with mild-to-moderate disease that occurred a few days ago and in the presence of clinical conditions that represent specific risk factors for the development of severe disease. Molnupiravir is the new one in distribution: its use is indicated within 5 days from the onset of symptoms. The duration of treatment, which consists of taking 4 tablets (200 mg) twice a day, is 5 days.
3. Synthetic opioids, including fentanyl continued to be the primary driver of drug overdose deaths, with fatal overdoses involving such substances accounting for more than 60% of drug fatalities in 2020. The report’s findings highlight the profound impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the country’s opioid epidemic. However, many experts believe the increase in drug overdose deaths is mostly tied to those who were already struggling with substance use issues before the pandemic.
4.  The new measure makes Italy one of very few European countries to make vaccination compulsory for a section of the general public. Austria announced in November it would make Covid-19 vaccines mandatory from February in a bid to tackle low vaccination rates. Some 78% of Italy’s population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and about 36% have received a booster shot. Health minister Roberto Speranza told reporters that anyone 50 or older will be checked to see if they have a “super green pass” before they enter their workplaces.

💊 The latest NEWS in pills, quick to read and digest!

1. On 13 December, the bill on assisted su***de arrived at the Chamber of Deputies, after the Court of Cassation also announced the validity of more than 1.2 million signatures collected for the Referendum for Legal Euthanasia, which could take place in the spring of 2022 and which would represent a step forward in terms of civil rights for our country. But let's be clear: with euthanasia it is the doctor who administers the lethal drug to the consenting patient, while with assisted su***de the doctor prescribes the drug which the patient will take himself. In any case, the requirements must first be checked and alternatives sought.

2. The study coordinated by the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) in Beijing and published in Emerging microbes & infection, tested in 28 patients previously infected with the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 the ability of antibodies to neutralise Omicron and other variants that had emerged in recent months. The loss of efficacy against the new variant was found to be 8.4-fold and against Delta 1.6-fold.

3. From the latest OECD Mental Health Report, the mental health of the population deteriorated at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. To date, it has not returned to pre-crisis levels in most OECD countries by 2021, although with significant variations. Care, assistance and the impact on work cost 4% of GDP.

4. In a scenario where digital health is growing also thanks to the 15 billion of Recovery and Resilience Plan’s funds, only 4% of health professionals have adequate eHealth skills. Microsoft presents an experiential path to allow the players in the healthcare sector to train, share experiences and live scenarios of innovation.

5. In a TV interview to "diMartedì", the academic Walter Ricciardi looking at the results of Censis, in which 10.9 percent of the Italian population thinks the vaccine is useless, says with confidence that the green pass will convince a portion of “no vax” to get vaccinated. Adding further that the cost of treating unvaccinated people is about 50 million per year.
