🇬🇧 𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓 🇴🇲
At the beginning of February, the second speleological expedition of the La Venta Association will depart for Oman. The previous expedition took place in January 2024, with the same objective: to explore “beyond the limits” of Qanaf Cave, on the Dofhar plateau. The cave is a large that drains an area of about 10 km2: a long “wadi” (i.e. a valley/canyon) flows into a gigantic 50 m shaft, followed by other vertical shafts alternating with horizontal tunnels: the limit is over 200 m deep, on the shores of a mysterious underground lake, where instruments have detected the presence of 4.3% CO2. An environment impossible for survival.
To overcome this limit, CO2 recycling respirators and recovery stations with compressed air cylinders will be used. Exploration is made difficult by the increasing presence of carbon dioxide already at -100 m, accompanied by a constant increase in temperature, which exceeds 29°C on the shores of the terminal lake with over 90% relative humidity: a factor that brings the perceived temperature to over 43°C. The probable source of the system is located about 5 km downstream as the crow flies.
A medical team will constantly monitor activities, checking for the presence of gas in the blood and recovery times. In the deeper areas, microbiological sampling and observations of bats adapted to a higher percentage of CO2 are planned. The La Venta team will also have to re-equip the entire cave with new anchors due to the recent floods that have rendered the existing ones unusable.
After landing in the city of Salalah, the group of 14 people will immediately move to the mountains in the Qanaf Cave area (about 1000 m above sea level) where the base camp will be set up with everything necessary for logistics and rescue. In addition to the main cave, reconnaissance missions are planned in other absorption points of the underground system, together with parallel documentation and naturalistic census activities. The return to Italy is scheduled for 15 February.

A inizio febbraio partirà alla volta dell’Oman la seconda spedizione speleologica dell’Associazione La Venta in questo paese. La precedente fu nel gennaio 2024, sempre con lo stesso obiettivo: l’esplorazione “oltre il limite” della Qanaf Cave, sull’altopiano del Dofhar.
La grotta è un grande inghiottitoio che drena un’area di circa 10 km2: un lungo “wadi” (cioè una valle/canyon) si getta in un gigantesco pozzo da 50 m cui seguono altre verticali alternate a gallerie orizzontali: il limite si trova a oltre 200 m di profondità, sulle rive di un misterioso lago sotterraneo, dove gli strumenti hanno rilevato la presenza di CO2 al 4,3%.
Un ambiente impossibile per la sopravvivenza.
Per superare questo limite si useranno dei respiratori a riciclo di CO2 e stazioni di recupero con bombole ad aria compressa.
L'esplorazione è resa difficile dalla presenza crescente di anidride carbonica già da -100 m, accompagnata da un aumento costante della temperatura che sulle rive del lago terminale supera i 29°C con oltre il 90% di umidità relativa: un fattore che porta la temperatura percepita a oltre 43°C.
La probabile sorgente del sistema si trova a circa 5 km a valle in linea d’aria.
Un equipe medica seguirà costantemente le attività monitorando la presenza di gas nel sangue e i tempi di recupero. Nelle zone profonde sono previsti campionamenti microbiologici e osservazioni sui chirotteri adattati a una maggiore percentuale di CO2.
Il Team La venta dovrà anche riarmare tutta la grotta con nuovi ancoraggi a causa delle ultime piene che hanno reso inutilizzabili quelli esistenti.
Dopo l’atterraggio alla città di Salalah il gruppo, composto da 14 persone, si sposterà subito in montagna nella zona della Qanaf Cave (circa 1000 m di quota) dove verrà installato il campo base con tutto il necessario per gli aspetti logistici e di soccorso.
Oltre alla grotta principale sono previste ricognizioni in altri punti di assorbimento del sistema sotterraneo, assieme a un’attività parallela di documentazione e censimento naturalistico. Il rientro in Italia è previsto per il 15 febbraio.
