Why the Future Belongs to Graduates Who Combine Technology and Humanities?
European academics say social sciences, arts, and humanities are essential, not optional, for solving global challenges. At the Human Values and Grand Challenges conference in Copenhagen experts promoted people focused innovation. Hosted by Aalborg University with other Danish universities and backed by the European Commission, the event will help shape the next EU Horizon research program.
Speakers said only about 40% of Horizon Europe projects include humanities, which is too low, and that major challenges cannot be solved by technology alone without understanding society. Humanities must be a core part of European research from the start, as values give innovation meaning, direction, public trust, and help shape Europe’s future.
Speakers highlighted interdisciplinary collaboration, with universities like Aalborg and Erasmus using shared missions. The Nordic Humanities Center launched a program for six researchers to tackle climate, misinformation, inequality, democracy, and AI with real world partners, as humanities keep human values central in addressing today’s interconnected crises.
University leaders said humanities help build social and democratic resilience. In times of populism, polarization, and AI, skills like critical reading, clear writing, context awareness, and fair debate are vital for democracy. Despite criticism that humanities lack economic. Universities must support democratic culture and use problem-focused humanities to better understand geopolitics, media populism, climate perceptions, and human behavior.
Speakers said neglecting humanities has made it harder to understand war, inequality, polarization, and AI, and that history, literature, philosophy, and language should be central to STEM. Interest in Humanities is growing, with more fellowships and collaborations, and students with interdisciplinary skills combining humanities and technology are increasingly valued in Europe.
