Rome, Italy🇮🇹Magnitude 4.0 earthquake rocks Campi Flegrei

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake rocked the Campi Flegrei area near Naples at 13:46 on Friday as a worrying a wave of seismic activity in the volcanic caldera continued.

The quake, which struck at a depth of four kilometers, could be felt in several districts of Naples. The Campi Flegrei area, also known the Phlegrean Fields in English, is currently being affected by bradyseism, or ground uplift, and there have been a series of earthquakes there in recent months.

The civil protection department said there were no initial reports of damage from Friday's quake. Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has appointed a special commissioner for the Campi Flegrei area to take care of risk-prevention measures.

The minister has complained about how urban development had been allowed in the area. "The government is giving more than its due on the Phlegraean Fields, one of the most dangerous and complex volcanoes in the world," he said last month. "Extremely serious responsibilities are emerging, both distant and less distant ones, involving all bodies, starting with the regional government and the municipalities concerned - Naples, Pozzuoli and Bacoli. "Unreasonable, chaotic and haphazard urban development was authorized, and the impending dangers in the area were never taken into account. "Those who were supposed to supervise did not do so".

Rome, Italy🇮🇹Archaeologists think they’ve found remains of an ancient Papal palace in Rome, predating the Vatican

Experts say the architectural structure – where popes lived before the Vatican became the official residence – could have been built between the 9th-13th century AD.

The Pope and the Vatican – these words have become near synonymous to many. But, Popes did not live at the Vatican until the 14th century. Now archaeologists say they’ve found the remains of what might be an ancient palace, the residence of the papal seat of that time.

An excavation team uncovered the architectural structure when working on a piazza outside the Archbasilica of St John Lateran in central Rome. According to the Italian Ministry of Culture, which made a statement on the discovery last week, it is surrounded by defensive walls that could have been built as early as the 9th century AD and as late as the 13th century AD.

Archaeologists think the walls were potentially constructed as a means to protect the Patriarchio, a monumental basilica originally planned by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century. The structure was expanded and renovated numerous times throughout the Middle Ages, experts say, and is believed to have housed several popes until 1305, until conflict with France saw it moved to Avignon.

“This is an extraordinarily important find for the city of Rome and its mediaeval history, as no extensive archaeological excavations have ever been carried out in the square in modern times,” the Italian Ministry of Culture said.

The excavations were being carried out prior to renovations for the 2025 Catholic Holy Year, or Jubilee – a year-long event starting in December that is expected to draw over 30 million pilgrims and tourists to Rome.

"Every single stone speaks to us and tells its story: thanks to these important discoveries, archaeologists will be able to learn more about our past,” Culture Minister Gennaro Sanguiliano commented on the discovery.

Venice, Italy🇮🇹Venice officials defend day-tripper tax, but delay the decision on extending it

Venice city officials said Friday that the day-tripper tax netted 2.4 million euros ($2.6 million) during a test phase this summer, and that decisions on how to proceed would be made in the fall after a full analysis of the data.

According to the city, the 5-euro tax was paid 485,062 times over the 29 test days, mostly weekends and holidays, from April 25 to July 14. The final numbers included paper access tickets sold to bus tours, cruise ships and some tour operators, accounting for about 1,000 entrances on each of the test days.

Italians accounted for 60% of visitors to the ticket website in the period, followed by U.S., German and French citizens, ranging from 6.5% to 4% of the totals.

City officials have indicated that the system, where day-trippers pay an entrance fee, would be extended next year, and doubled to 10 euros, at least on some days, but did not make any immediate announcements.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said that the city would consider adjusting the fee based on if the tax is paid in advance, or at the last minute. He defended the tourist tax from critics, who called it a failure for allegedly not deterring arrivals, as envisioned.

“We listened to citizens, to associations, to thousands of people, but in the end, there were no alternative solutions to ours,” Brugnaro said. “We thought to take this road of the controls, which were light enough, not invasive.”

Visitors not staying in lodging in the city were required to download a QR code showing they had paid the tax; officials said that the average length of the transaction was 2 minutes. Hotel guests, who pay a lodging tax, were exempt, as were people living in the Veneto region, visitors under 14, and those visiting relatives, among others.

Venice has long been grappling with overtourism, with estimates of 25 million to 30 million annual arrivals of both day-trippers and overnight guests roughly confirmed by cell phone data tracked from a Smart Control Room since 2020, according to city officials.

The day-tripper tax, delayed by the pandemic, was heralded by UNESCO member states when they decided against a recommendation to place the city on its list of world heritage sites in danger. The city had escaped inclusion on the list two years earlier when it imposed a cruise ship ban down the Giudecca canal and through St. Mark’s Basin.

The city’s top tourist official, Simone Venturini, said the entrance fee marked “a cultural revolution.”

“For the first time in the world, a city has an instrument that allows to finally have clear data, and not just approximate estimates, not longer interpretations of data, but exact data” of people entering and leaving the city,’’ he said.

On July 20-21 and 27-28, 2024 in Riolo Terme, a village on Ravenna hills it takes place the 32nd edition of Romagna Shallot IGP Festival.

In the past time in the countryside of Romagna, the people used to prepare shallots preserving them in oil, so that it was possible to eat them as a winter side plate with boiled meat.

The preparation occurred in the farmyard and it was a moment of reunion and celebration, with wine, donuts, and accordion! For this traditional heritage nowadays the Shallots Festival is enriched with shows, music, and entertainment for the whole family.

The farmers that have the IGP certification can exhibit and sell their products in the streets of the city center.

Food is prepared at Parco Pertini where it is possible to taste different specialties shallots-based, such as risotto, tagliolini with Shallots, or roasted meat seasoned with shallot.
Every evening: music, shows and entertainment.

The food stand opens from 6.30pm on Saturday. On Sundays it also open for lunch from Noon for takeaway service.

Tables and benches are available to those wishing to dine on-site and they will be placed inside the park and along the main avenue. There is no table service but takeaway will always be available. Tthose who wish to eat on-site will receive the necessary covers.

Pistoia, Italy🇮🇹Joust of the Bear
Date: July 22, 2024 – July 25, 2024

From 22 to 25 of July, on the days dedicated to San Jacopo, patron saint of the city, in Pistoia take place the feasts and the Joust of the Bear (Giostra dell’Orso).

The feast begins on July 22nd and 23rd with rehearsals.
On July 24th there is the relics of the saint procession, and fireworks.

On July 25th a historical procession precedes the joust and winds around the city walls. Re-enactors in medieval costume participate accompanied by medieval drums, trumpets and instruments.

In the evening the Joust of the Bear is a modern version of the ancient Palio of the Berbers that dates back to 1200.

The challenge is between the four districts of the city: Porta al Borgo, Porta Carratica, Porta San Marco and Porta Lucchese.

The jockeys, 3 for each district, compete with each other armed with spears, and have to hit a wooden target in the shape of a bear, also called “micco”, which represents the animal symbol of the Municipality of Pistoia.

The winning district is awarded the Palio, the banner, or “rag”, painted each year by a different artist and which in ancient times was made with fabrics and precious stones.

The Joust of the Bear is one of the most important and famous events in Pistoia and one of the oldest reenactments in Italy.

Rome, Italy🇮🇹Security at US sites in Italy at maximum level

Security at sensitive United States sites in Italy which could be potential targets for attack remains at the highest level following the assassination attempt on former United States President and Republican candidate Donald Trump. These sites include US embassies and diplomatic sites and branches of American universities in Italy. The security level had already been lifted to the maximum after Hamas's October 7 attacks on Israel.

Washington, United States🇺🇸Possible security lapses in focus after Trump rally shooting
By Gram Slattery, Alexandra Ulmer and Joseph Tanfani

Republican lawmakers said they would launch swift investigations into how a sniper apparently managed to evade Secret Service agents and climb onto the roof of a building near where Donald Trump was speaking at an election rally and fire multiple shots before being killed.

While information about the incident is still sparse, early media reports said the shooter was outside the security perimeter of the rally venue in Butler, Pennsylvania. At least one person interviewed by the BBC said he tried to alert police and the Secret Service, to no avail, to the apparent sniper.

Trump supporters blasted the Secret Service, which has the primary responsibility for protecting Trump as a former U.S. president. Billionaire ally Elon Musk called for the agency's leadership to resign.

"How was a sniper with a full rifle kit allowed to bear crawl onto the closest roof to a presidential nominee," asked conservative activist Jack Posobiec on social media site X.

Republican House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson said on social media that the House will have "Secret Service Director KIMBERLY CHEATLE and other appropriate officials from DHS (Department of Homeland Security) and the FBI appear for a hearing before our committees ASAP."

The Secret Service said shortly after the shooting that it has begun an investigation and briefed Democratic President Joe Biden, Trump's rival in the Nov 15 election, though the agency did not immediately respond to additional requests for comment regarding its protocols.

The Pennsylvania State Police referred questions to the Secret Service, which did not immediately respond.

Attendee Ben Maser was outside the rally perimeter, listening to Trump, when he noticed two officers seemingly looking for someone. Maser, a 41-year old welder, started scanning the area too.

"I saw the guy on the roof. I told the officer that he was up there. He went about looking for him," said Maser.

The attack is certain to lead to a review of Trump's security, and going forward he will likely be provided with a level of protection more akin to a sitting president, said Joseph LaSorsa, a former Secret Service agent who served on the presidential detail.

"There will be an intensive review" of the incident and "there's going to be a massive realignment," LaSorsa said. "This cannot happen."

The Secret Service said in a statement that it had recently added "protective resources and capabilities" to Trump's security detail, without providing further details.

A retired agent who worked in protective services, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident should spark an internal review, and ideally an external one too.

"The gravity of the situation demands thorough scrutiny to prevent such failures in the future and to ensure accountability on all levels," said the former agent.

SECURING TRUMP RALLIES

During most of Trump's campaign stops, local police aid the Secret Service in securing the venue. Agents from other agencies within the Department of Homeland Security, such as the Transportation Security Administration, occasionally help.

It is no easy task. Many Trump rallies feature thousands of audience members, take place in the open air and last for hours.

Before the event, agents scan the venue for bombs or other threats, and Trump invariably arrives in a fortified motorcade.

Law enforcement officials typically put up barriers as a perimeter, and require all attendees to go through a metal detector to enter the venue. Armed protective agents search all attendees' bags and even wallets. Many rallygoers are patted down by hand.

Paul Eckloff, a former Secret Service agent who retired in 2020, said agents would have surveyed all the rooftops with a line of sight ahead of time.

"This person either concealed themselves until they became a threat, or were not a threat until they revealed their weapons," said Eckloff.

In the moments after Trump was injured, the former president was quickly surrounded by Secret Service personnel who formed a human shield, while heavily armed agents in body armor and toting rifles also took to the stage and appeared to scan the area for threats.

Trump was whisked by the agents to a black SUV, and taken to a local hospital, according to the campaign.

Rome, Italy🇮🇹Italy to give another Samp-T to Kyiv says Meloni

Italy is to give Ukraine another Samp-T air defense system to shoot down Russian missiles, Premier Giorgia Meloni said on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington on Tuesday night.

Meloni made the announcement shortly after United States President Joe Biden said the US is supplying Kyiv with Patriot missiles along with Germany and Romania. "We really focused on an issue that is extremely important, which is air defense because it means defending civilians above all and the critical infrastructure that Russia is continuing to attack, as we saw yesterday with a pediatric hospital struck in Kyiv and the cancer-affected children in the streets," said Meloni after an attack she had described as "horrible".

Meloni added that Italy will get up to defense spending of 2% of GDP as requested by the United States and NATO according to its own timeframe and financial possibilities, given budget constraints.

She said that Italy "will keep faith with its commitments" to spend 2% of GDP on defense "obviously with the times and possibilities that we have" and also considering "the country's overall commitment to NATO", where we are "among the largest contributors of personnel in almost all missions and peacekeeping operations because our know-how is in great demand".

Palermo, Italy🇮🇹Feast of Saint Rosalia
Date: July 13, 2024 – July 15, 2024

The Feast of Santa Rosalia (U Festìnu) takes place from in July, and it is a real tourist buster in Palermo. The topic of the feast is on July 14th.

According to local faith, in 1624 Santa Rosalia, the city’s patron saint also called la Santuzza. saved the city’s residents from a dreadful plague after her relics were found in Monte Pellegrino.

This year it is celebrated the 400 edition!

U Fistinu (the feast), starts some days before, but the night between 14-15 July it reaches its peak. Thousands of people follow the parade led by a giant iron-made chariot, from the Cathedral to the Foro Italico. Folklore and religion meet and explode into traditional fireworks, making you believe the sun is shining.

On July 15th at 7:00 pm, a second procession takes place which carries the relic of the Saint through the streets of the city. It is a religious procession during which the city is entrusted to Santa Rosalia and the Archbishop pronounces a message.

Traditional dishes are served during the all week: pasta with sardines (la pasta chî sardi), babbaluci (boiled snails with garlic and parsley), sfincione (‘u sfinciuni), boiled octopus ( ‘u purpu), calia e simenza ( ‘u scacciu), boiled panicle (pullanca) and watermelon (detto ‘u muluni).

Saint Rosalia and its worship are a chance for residents to get together. Their motto is Hurray to Palermo and to Saint Rosalia! (Viva Palermo e Santa Rosalia!).
