A huge win today for the food allergy community. Uber Eats heard the community and announced that they will edit the commercial to remove the offensive content related to peanut allergies.

Allergy & Asthma Network monitors how messaging around allergic diseases is presented in popular culture, so we were disappointed this week to see a Super Bowl commercial for Uber Eats make light of food allergies.

Our national spokesperson, Purvi Parikh, MD, was interviewed by Today Show about it this week: “It’s not good to make light of forgetting any food ingredients given the severity of life-threatening food allergies that affect millions of children and adults. Deaths occur due to these ‘forgotten ingredients’ and exposures, most recently, an NYC dancer who died because peanut was not disclosed as an ingredient.”

Making light of food allergies can be especially harmful to young audiences because exposure to such imagery and dialogue can influence them socially and psychologically, suggest food allergies are not to be taken seriously, and lead to food allergy bullying.

We urge Uber Eats to provide food allergy education and messages that address the seriousness of allergic reactions and promote positive attitudes about living with food allergies.

Spring has sprung!
Thank you and for having me on to talk all things spring allergies and asthma as well as tips on what to do and when to seek help.

If you don’t have time to watch the clip below 👇🏽 here’s a few quick tips:
- 24 hour antihistamines 💊🏥like Zyrtec Claritin Allegra and Xyzal work better and have fewer side effects than old school ones like Benadryl or hydroxyzine which make you super drowsy and wear off in 6 hours
- There are a lot of over counter nasal sprays and eyes drops that are super effective like nasal steroid sprays and antihistamines
- STAY away from decongestants like afrin (oxymetazoline), pseudofed and anything with a “D” - plain Zyrtec is fine but Zyrtec-D shouldn’t be used long term. These can ironically make your congestion worse in the long run with a rebound effect AND are habit forming with scary side effects like high heart rate and blood pressure 💊🤧🤕
- Asthma (coughing, wheezing chest tightness or chest pain) should never be treated over the counter as it can be life threatening 🫁🚨🚑
- allergies are the most common cause of asthma 🫁
- Non medical tips to reduce pollen exposure include : keeping windows closed, wearing a 😷 mask, and showering once you come into the house and changing your clothes.
- If you are struggling, see a board certified allergist/immunologist, there is a lot that can be done! 👩🏻‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️🏥
