During the processing and transformation of the Duplex stainless steels it is possible to encounter problems that could compromise the chemical, mechanical and corrosion properties of the final product.

The chromium nitrides (Cr2N) are a perfect example of a detrimental chemical compound for the Duplex steels: they affect the resilience of the product (ASTM E23 - ISO 148-1) worsening its fragility, at the same time the Chromium reduction in solution reduces the pitting corrosion resistance (ASTM G48).

Thanks to an internal laboratory study, we conducted a series of tests on a UNS S32760 steel, executing a heat treatment in order to increase the chromium nitrides concentration inside the ferritic matrix.

We have focused our attention on the ex*****on of the metallographic chemical etching procedures (ASTM E407): in the image, it is possible to see a generic etching (on the left) compared to a specific etching (in the right). The generic etching shows the classic biphaisc Duplex structure, while the specific etching enables the observation of the high chromium nitrides concentration that would not be observable otherwise.

The metallographic abiity and know-how of a laboratory is fundamental during the quality control and R&D stages.

Nei processi di lavorazione e trasformazione degli acciai inossidabili austeno-ferritici (Duplex / bifasici) è possibile riscontrare problematiche che possono compromettere le proprietà chimiche, meccaniche e corrosive del prodotto finale.

I nitruri di cromo (Cr2N) in particolare, se presenti nella matrice ferritica degli acciai inossidabili Duplex, possono impattare sulla resilienza (ASTM E23 - ISO 148-1) del prodotto rendendolo più fragile. I nitruri di cromo, riducendo la presenza di Cromo in soluzione, possono inoltre peggiorare la resistenza alla corrosione localizzata (pitting) (ASTM G48).

In uno studio interno di laboratorio, abbiamo eseguito alcuni test su di un acciaio UNS S32760 eseguendo un trattamento termico atto a concentrare i nitruri di cromo nella matrice ferritica.

Particolare attenzione è stata volta all'esecuzione degli attacchi chimici metallografici (ASTM E407): nell'immagine si può osservare un attacco generico (a sinistra) comparato ad un attacco specifico (a destra). L'attacco generico mostra la classica struttura bifasica degli acciai Duplex, mentre l'attacco specifico permette di osservare l'elevata concentrazione di nitruri di Cromo che altrimenti non risulterebbe rilevabile durante i controlli di laboratorio.

Le capacità e le conoscenze metallografiche di un laboratorio di prova giocano un ruolo fondamentale durante le fasi di controllo qualità e ricerca e sviluppo.
