👉 3 things nobody tells you about living abroad

1. Loneliness can show up even when your life looks full 🧍‍♀️
You can have plans, meet new people, explore a new city — and still feel a quiet sense of disconnection.

2. You may stop feeling fully at home anywhere 🏡
Home starts to feel far away, but the new place doesn’t completely feel like yours yet.
It’s a strange “in-between” space.

3. You change more than you expect 🧳
Living abroad often shifts your identity, your priorities, and how you see yourself — sometimes in ways that are hard to explain to others.

These experiences are more common than people think when adapting to a new country 🌏

🧭 Living abroad can sometimes change how we experience belonging.

Many people move to another country for exciting reasons — work, love, opportunities, curiosity about the world.

But over time, some expats notice a subtle emotional shift.

You may still feel connected to your home country, yet no longer fully part of everyday life there.
At the same time, building a deep sense of belonging in a new place can take time.

Psychological research on acculturation describes this experience as living “between cultures”, where identity and belonging are gradually renegotiated.

This process is very common when people adapt to life in a new country.

As described in the acculturation research of John W. Berry, adapting to a different cultural context often involves redefining what home and belonging mean over time.

Have you ever experienced this feeling while living abroad?

🌍 Living abroad can feel lonely in ways that are hard to explain.

Many expats move to a new country for exciting reasons — work, love, adventure, opportunities. From the outside, it often looks like a beautiful life.

But psychological research on expatriate adjustment shows that living abroad can also bring a quieter emotional experience: a sense of being “in-between worlds.”

You may feel:
• connected to your home country, but no longer fully part of it
• integrated in the new country, but still somehow an outsider
• surrounded by people, yet sometimes deeply alone.

This experience is common when people go through major cultural transitions. It doesn’t mean something is wrong — it often means you are in the process of redefining identity, belonging, and home.

Sometimes the hardest part of living abroad is not the move itself, but figuring out where you belong afterwards.
