I’ll be honest. At the beginning of this journey some yoga poses sucked, I chased freedom of movement so badly that I injured myself many times overstretching, pulling muscles and contracting the fascia so much that some days I had to full body foam roll for hours. I went to the physio a ridiculous amount of time to the point he started to tell me off. I forced myself into poses to get quicker into splits, prasarita, pyramid pose, pigeon, full lotus, bridge and so on, that I forgot the whole point of the practice. And I would have got where I am now a lot quicker if I didn’t mess with my body so much. Yes, your splits might not be there yet, your legs don’t go into full lotus and your bridge looks more like a half bridge. Trust me, I know the feeling, I started yoga in my 30s without any gymnastics or dancing background. In fact I have scoliosis and I worked a desk job for 10 years. But I can tell you this much, if I could get into full splits, and many of the full expressions of the poses I always wanted to achieve, then you can do it too. At any age. And yes, it will take longer than you think. You’re not a 6 year old kid. But you will get there eventually. Your poses won’t look aesthetically cool at the beginning and you’ll be frustrated for a while. But DON’T GIVE UP. And no, you don’t need to stretch every day obsessively. Just have a method, even twice a week can hugely improve your flexibility. Also, practicing only the pose you want to achieve repeatedly won’t do the job. Work on other easier poses that gradually open your body to the final pose, use props, blocks and straps. It will give you more control on what you are doing and less risk of injury. Always breathe slow. Always. One day you will find so much space and freedom in your body that you’ll be able to breath head to toes…and it will all be worth it 💚
