the 4 chambers of the heart 🫀
…Let us learn karma-dharma-samyoga. Do good and virtuous karma as a religious and righteous duty and forget about it.
We know that the brain has four lobes and the heart four chambers. As I read and re-
read the Yoga Sutra, I thought that Patanjali divides these four lobes of the brain as four parts of intellectual development. These are analytical part (vitarka), the part that reasons and synthesises (vicara), the part of bliss (ananda), and the fourth part as the seat of the individual selt (asmita or
sasmita). These parts make man develop his intellect by means of vertical growth to reach the highest level in acquiring knowledge, the four chambers of the heart are meant for horizontal growth of intelligence through friendliness (maitn) compassion (karuna), gladness (mudita) and indifference to good or bad virtue and vice (upeksa).
Patanjali speaks of the head as an intellectual seat and of the heart as an emotional
Seat. I used these two faces of the intelligence in practising asana. I worked out ways of how to
bring head and heart to co-ordinate in the practice and learnt how they have to co-operate not Only with the body but with the consciousness also. This helped me to realise what is harmony, concord and balance.
