What counts as valid coaching theme?

When coaching is used to prepare for a future role that also offers the client a space where they can reveal what is really happening for them. Indeed, the coaching space may be their safe space to share their difficulties and doubts.

Just some examples of common themes and issues brought to coaching:
- Work on skills that have plateaued or need to move to a higher level of
- Expand one’s repertoire of and
- Learn to and downward, both critical factors in how a manager is perceived
- How professionals and managers come across and the impact they leave
- Step up one’s game and handle the increased pace and complexity of their role
- to meet business objective
- Leaving the organization well

Coaching turns into a and where the coachee can hear their own voice and play things out

How the coach professional background and their continuous professional development are relevant factors in coaching?

Typically, coaches have development needs in at least one of the key domains highlighted by P. Bluckert.

The ones coming from the world (ex-Directors-turned-coaches) have a strong organizational experience, but they may need to work on their appreciation of the difference between coaching and consulting and may err more on the latter (the “been there, done that” mindset).

Former may be excellent coaches, but at the same time could miss a deeper awareness of the business world (and be tempted to use sports and games as a metaphor for everything).

people usually have a broader spectrum of organizational and development competencies. However, they may lack a solid psychological training.

On the contrary, , and will be stronger in that domain but often lack corporate knowledge and experience.

So how do you choose your coaches?
While it is true that there is no one-size-fits-all for coaching, here 3 key aspects to consider:

Here’s why executive coaches need awareness of organizational dynamics.

Balancing and personal satisfaction is not always easy and experienced coaches develop their own ways of satisfying both adopting a systemic perspective. Why effective coaches do that?

The risk when the coach has little knowledge or sympathy for corporate life and does not consider organizational dynamics is that the client may feel better – in the short term - but the sponsor paying the bills will often feel disappointed because the actual goals set for the client’s performance are not met.

Also, the client themselves may feel let down when realizing their efforts didn’t bring them any long lasting growth or results.

The business case for must go beyond the facilitation of learning and self-development. Coaching of leaders needs to directly translate into more effective actions and improved performance to be an investment beneficial to the entire organization.
