At the BFE 24th Meeting in Szczecin, I presented a model based on a paper co-authored with Dr. Emanuele Bignamini, integrating neurofeedback and psychotherapy in a layered way.
- Subcortical regulation (neurofeedback acting on the biological unconscious)
- Affective regulation (reduced defensive reactivity)
- Affective & relational integration (psychotherapy)
The idea is simple: you cannot reorganize meaning if the biological unconscious is still dysregulated.
At the same time, psychotherapy can also prepare the ground, strengthening awareness, motivation, and relational safety, making neurophysiological regulation more effective.
Neurofeedback helps stabilize underlying affective systems.
Psychotherapy gives direction, meaning, and relational transformation.
The process is not linear, but dynamic and reciprocal.
This is what we call the Gateway Paradigm.
I’m also grateful for the days spent at the BFE meeting, always a space for growth, meaningful connections, and true collaboration. I really enjoyed Inna Khazan and Urszula Klich workshop!
A special thank you to Richard Harvey, to the Biofeedback Federation of Europe team and in particular to Carol Meyers for her availability and support. And to the Thought Tech crew, Frank De Gregorio and Helen Mavros for their precious support and friendship.
