Mandibular incisor root remnants in rabbits: one of the most delicate and frustrating procedures in exotic animal oral surgery.

In this video, I show an extraoral ventral approach for the extraction of retained mandibular incisor roots performed using a piezoelectric surgical technique.

The real revolution of this approach is that it is not based on force.
There is no need for traumatic movements with elevators or luxators, nor for aggressive bone removal with rotary burs.

Mandibular squamous cell carcinoma in a 6-year-old setter.
A major surgery: extended subtotal mandibulectomy performed through an intraoral approach.

But this is the message I really want to share: this surgery can be curative, and most importantly, it can restore real quality of life.

After healing, this dog went back to playing, chewing, being active, and enjoying a normal life again.

Falco Pellegrino femmina con osteomielite del Digitus I (hallux). Il primo dito era gravemente compromesso, con marcata lisi ossea e rischio concreto di amputazione. In un rapace destinato al recupero in natura, la perdita dell’hallux significa riduzione drastica della capacità di presa, di caccia e quindi della possibilità di sopravvivenza. È stato eseguito un trattamento chirurgico mediante approccio piezoelettrico associato a ultrasonic wound debridement, rimuovendo selettivamente l’osso osteomielitico e preservando il tessuto sano residuo. Risultato: guarigione clinica e radiografica a 21 giorni. La chirurgia piezoelettrica ha già dimostrato risultati straordinari nel trattamento della pododermatite nei rapaci. Female Peregrine Falcon with Digit I (hallux) osteomyelitis. The first digit was severely compromised, with extensive bone lysis and real risk of amputation. In a raptor intended for release, loss of the hallux dramatically reduces grasping strength, hunting ability and survival chances. Surgical management was performed using a piezoelectric approach combined with ultrasonic wound debridement, allowing selective removal of osteomyelitic bone while preserving healthy tissue. Outcome: clinical and radiographic healing at 21 days. Piezoelectric surgery has already shown remarkable results in pododermatitis treatment in raptors.
