Sometimes you just need to empty your mind, get away from it all and explore what's around you.

Unexpected things happen when you are brave enough to open yourself up to new experiences and new horizons. Of course, we need to trust that we will be safe enough to even look up from the comfort of the familiar, be that the familiarity of sadness, rejection, fear, or any other habitual way of being.

So I encourage you to just look up a little, look around you a little more, and trust in yourself enough that you can stay safe even in unexpected or uncertain territory.

There is beauty all around you that you perhaps are avoiding, so be brave just a little and be willing to take a small risk so that you reset your mind and open your heart to new experiences.

Another excellent CPD opportunity for local counsellors on Pre-Trial Therapy Training. A must if your client is going to court.

JAAR is committed to the continued professional development of our counsellors. If you are a professional working with victims & survivors or witnesses of crime, we would like to invite you to join our upcoming Pre-Trial Therapy Training (PTT) with Jill Swindells of Qual Consultancy.

PTT has a lot more relevance to our work as counsellors & therapists than many seem to think. There is an inherent danger in seeing it as a niche specialism, particularly since the introduction of GDPR. PTT may be relevant to any of our clients who have been victims or witnesses of any crime at any time in their lives, regardless of whether they are already involved with the criminal justice system or are seriously intending to report the crime in the future. This is because circumstances, situations and decisions may change – clients might decide to report during or post counselling; clients may end up in court due to someone else reporting; shelved cases might return to court due to new evidence emerging & so on.

If clients who have experienced a crime are unaware of the implications of having ‘generic counselling’ we have failed to fully inform them and work appropriately. We cannot guarantee confidentiality as client notes & records might be requested or subpoenaed. The PTT Guidance has implications for how we ‘should’ work from the outset with all victims & witnesses of crime to achieve fully informed consent; & if too late, how we ‘should’ work as soon as we are aware of the situation regarding Criminal Justice System involvement.

This workshop covers all you need to know & includes an interactive PowerPoint presentation, detailed handouts for making additional notes, experiential exercises & plentiful resources. It focuses on adults & highlights the differences for children/young people, pre-trial therapy guidance, but also how it might inform other legal issues/interactions with clients/stakeholders.

Do you feel that the summer is slipping away from us? How can we stay in that vibe for longer? Getting back to the office diverts our attention to mundane tasks that we had managed to forget for a while, but is it possible to hold onto that feeling of so that we can continue to stay in that zone - the one where you rather like yourself and your life after all?

Choosing a picture that reminds you of your holiday, or a loved one, or anything really that elicits those good feelings is key to prolonging that state of . Print that picture out and put it on the fridge, get it framed, or make it your home screen on your pc or phone. It will then act as a visual cue and for a moment will transport you back to that place and the feelings associated with it. Allow yourself to access the feelings you felt when there for just a few moments.

Habits are made out of practicing small things often, these micro moments build up when the neural networks in your brain start to form habitual pathways, which if used over time strengthen. Rather like a muscle when exercised, the neural pathway becomes stronger, and the memories and associated feelings will become more readily accessible for longer.

You have the power to choose how you feel, take back control and take care of yourself.

Do you experience a Critical Inner Voice?

That little voice in your head that critically comments on things? You may have a range of expressions, thoughts or feelings, you may make a variety of sounds such as “grr” or a “tut”, use a variety of words, or some kind of image. You may have an internal dialogue going on. How do you respond to this criticism? Whatever your critical process or response I wish to discover more about this topic through my research.

¡ You an adult (over 18 years of age)

¡ You recognise that the voice is yours (i.e. not someone else inside your head)
