Nice little success story this week 😊

Look who’s been to see us today 👀

These couple of cuties popped in for a physio check up after undergoing rehabilitation for Swimmers Syndrome.

Kittens and puppies are sometimes born with an inability to adduct their limbs causing them to splay outwards and giving the appearance of them swimming! Treatment involves intensive physical therapy exercises performed several times daily to strengthen muscles and ligaments.

These little ones are doing great thanks to the owner’s hard work and dedication with their rehab ☺️

I’m really lucky to have an underwater treadmill at my disposal which allows for the most comprehensive rehabilitation programmes for my patients ☺️

So why hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy uses the benefits of water buoyancy, resistance, and hydrostatic pressure to support your dog.

Buoyancy supports the dogs body, meaning weight is lifted and they are no longer fighting gravity. This reduces stress on the joints and this creates a much safer and supported environment for recovery after surgery.

Resistance increases the force needed to push against it, therefore building muscle strength and coordination in a gentle manner.

Hydrostatic pressure is the force generated from the water column against your dogs body. This increases circulation, therefore increases detoxification. It also dulls nerve endings reducing pain, improves respiratory and reduces swelling.

Hydrotherapy is widely beneficial and particularly amazing for dogs recovering surgery, injuries, dogs who suffer from degenerative joint disease, or those who suffer from paralysis.

Water therapy can also help dogs suffering from fractures, hip dysplasia, the amputation of a limb, and neurological disorders, and Hydrotherapy may be especially beneficial for dogs who suffer from arthritis.

Everyone say hi to Rizzle!

Rizzle has been coming to see us for routine physiotherapy for instability of his left shoulder caused by ligament and tendon damage. Similar to a rotator cuff injury in people. Today, Rizzle has been fitted with a shoulder brace which will help support the joint and minimise further damage while he undergoes a rehabilitation programme designed to build and strengthen the muscles supporting his shoulder which will protect the joint in the long term. Rizzle isn’t convinced, but we think he looks really smart!

Physical and hydro therapy can be of huge benefit when recovering from a soft tissue injury. Not only does it facilitate healing the original injury but it also aims to protect against further damage and treat any compensatory issues that arise, before they become a problem.

If you are interested in booking an appointment for your pet please give us a ring!

I see an awful lot of geriatric, OA patients. It’s important that I keep up with any developments in the management of these dogs to ensure I’m providing the best service that I can as a veterinary physiotherapist.

Routine physiotherapy for OA dogs aims to manage pain, preserve and restore function, maintain or improve joint range of motion and slow progression of the disease. Maintaining your dog’s quality of life, for longer!

Such a lovely evening to watch some of my patients do their thing ☺️🐎

** BUSINESS UPDATE **

I have some exciting news to share with everyone! Many of you already know but I have been offered the opportunity to work as a Veterinary Physiotherapist for a vet practice based on the island of Jersey!

I am super excited to get started in my new role however this does mean that I am no longer offering vet physio services to the East Midlands area (the commute is just a little too far these days! 😉). I do know several other very experienced vet physios in the region that I will be happy to recommend for those of you that are still looking for services and I will still be posting advice and updates to this page when I can so look out for those.

In the mean time I look forward to meeting all my new patients and getting to know my beautiful new home! Once I’m out of isolation! 😂

** SHARE SHARE SHARE **

A bit of radio silence from me recently as I've been working hard on my MSc thesis but now I have exciting news to share!

My research survey is finally up and running and I'm inviting you all to share it far and wide and complete it if you are willing :)

I am researching owner and vet experiences of physiotherapy for non-surgical canine neurological disease, so I am looking for dog owners who've got or had a dog with such a condition and any UK based veterinary surgeons. You don't have to have used a vet physio before - I am just as keen to hear from people who've never used one as from those who have! The survey will take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Thank you all!

Although I am a qualified vet physio I am also working towards my MSc in the subject. This means I’m required to research and write an original thesis on a relevant topic. Today’s job - analysis of my pilot study results! The survey will be released to the public soon... watch this space!

In the mean time - contact me for enquiries about physio appointments!
