Sunday morning - a new routine, baking sourdough. I’m a novice at this, however baked bread for many years whilst my children were growing up.

I’m now bringing earlier learned professional cookery skills and experience to this practice.

As a discretionary grantee of the Sourdough School Annie Elliott Award, I am embarking on a 2 year journey on the Sourdough School Online Diploma in Nutrition and Digestibility of Bread.

I’m already finding the practice to be grounding and resourcing. I’m connecting with farmers and growers, locally and elsewhere, talking about regenerative growing/farming.

As a smallholder, I’m growing my own herbs and wildflowers, along with collaborations with others to grow ancient grains such as einkorn and spelt, as well as h**p.

I’ll be incorporating these into Botanical Blends of flour.

North coast Jersey…Le Catel de Lecq, acknowledged as the possible site of an Iron Age fort.

My daughter lives nearby and calls it ‘Sheep mountain,’ as it’s often home to roaming Manx Loaghtan sheep.

It’s a great spot for letting your thoughts wander, the view from the top looking out towards Sark often prompts new insights and new possibilities.

A beautiful view early afternoon today. I’d like to explore that cave in the 3rd pic!

Storm Goretti impact, Jersey, Channel Islands. Like the Scilly Isles and Cornwall, the Channel Islands were hit hard, many islanders didn’t sleep much over the night when the storm peaked. Our neighbours and sister island, Guernsey really bearing the brunt this time.

I spent last Friday and Saturday with my son clearing fallen trees, returning as much as possible to the hedgerow for ongoing benefits to the soil, plants and wildlife.

I had planned to commence a series of weekly walks this week, but having been out and about around the island visiting various sites that I often guide in I’ve decided to postpone the start of these regular weekly walks. I’ve noticed hanging branches, unstable looking trees and banks in various places.

I know that teams from the and as well as have been out and about working to make everything safe.

I assure you that I always assess paths, routes and trails constantly, to ensure that everyone’s experience on a guided walk, talk and/or tour is enjoyable and safe.

Please see for new dates. I shall be adding some new events today too, so look out for something to suit you.

Looking forward to you joining me on a trail soon!

Our Natural Environment team, working alongside the Jersey Access Service Providers (JASP), is working to protect wild birds this winter, and raising the awareness of the importance of keeping your distance.

If a wild bird flies away, you were simply too close. As you enjoy Jersey's countryside this winter, please give our visitors space to feed and conserve their energy for their next long journey.

A beautiful sunny day dawned yesterday, the calm after the storm.

I noticed a request from a friend who needed help to clear a veteran Hawthorn tree that had fallen into a neighbour’s field. I messaged Nikki to discover whether she still required help, on affirmation of this I asked my son Leo if he would be happy to help? Yes, of course.

A little while later, we set off for the La Croix Regeneration Centre, stopping by on the way to pick up additional oil mix for Leo’s chainsaw. They weren’t open, however folks were there, and after explaining what we wanted to do, Leo was taken into the store to fetch what he needed. Payment to be taken on Monday. Thank you!

Arrived at La Croix, we walked down to the field to assess the fallen tree, which turned out to be two trees, the veteran tree having split, and a large limb uprooting a younger hawthorn next to it on the hedgerow.

Nikki wanted to keep as much of the main branches intact for various purposes on the farm, so she and Leo discussed how to go about cutting the tree…an ongoing process as time went on.

As branches were cut, assessed, some were moved immediately to create some dead hedging further down the hedgerow. The largest pieces laid alongside the hedgerow to be collected another day.

The truck was loaded with some pieces cut from the base of the split limb, heavy pieces that will form nice seats at the farm. Leo and I tested them out later, sitting enjoying some oranges, and the view over the fields.

The day was all about community action - supporting each other when needed.
