Charles Robottom D.C

Charles graduated from the Anglo European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth in 1990. He worked in London and the Home Counties for 9 years before returning home to Jersey in 1999, to set up Orchard Chiropractic Centre. He uses a number of Chiropractic techniques, but primarily the Sacro Occiputal Technique that looks at the whole person and uses gentle manipulation, cranial techniques and rehabilitative exercise and dietary/lifestyles advice to return a patient to optimal health. Charles treats babies that are just a few days old through to patients in their nineties. He also treats Mum’s to be, children, desk based and sports professionals - what matters the most to him is that every patient receives the care and treatment they uniquely need to return to optimal heath. Charles is married with a young family. Sarah Corcoran

Sarah regularly sees people who have tension in their back, neck and shoulders which causes pain and discomfort and often headaches. Massage can help break down the tension and relieve the pain and headaches. It is a great treatment for people sitting at desks all day, bent over a tablet or laptop, and for people suffering from repetitive strain injuries. Sarah also has experience working with local athletes and has treated some of the world's top triathletes who visited the Island with Super League Triathlon for the last 3 years. Sarah started running when she was 23 and still runs and competes in triathlons regularly. A massage after events or after periods of heavy training helps clear out lactic acid, reduces muscle soreness and enables you to resume intense training more quickly. Massage can also enhance muscle flexibility and correct imbalances, thereby reducing the risk of injury and increasing your range of movement and mobility. Many of Sarah's clients incorporate regular massage in their training plans when they are preparing for a marathon, triathlon or ironman events. As a member of Spartan Athletic Club, and the Jersey Triathlon Club and competing for both, Sarah understands how the body works and how important it is to look after yourself along the way. Listen to your body and get treatment along the way to help you get the best from yourself, speed up recovery and prevent injury. Clare Bourne

She worked in the USA at Texas Back Institute for several years and ran a private practice in South Africa. There Clare taught regularly on a post graduate manual therapy diploma course before settling in Jersey in 2007 with her family. She has worked in private practice ever since. Clare treats all neuro-muscular-skeletal problems, which is any condition affecting your joints, nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone. This includes back and neck pain - acute or persistent, other joint problems, including hips, knees, stiff or painful shoulders, tennis elbows, headaches and post operative rehabilitation. Areas of special interest:

Back and neck pain

Tendon and joint pain in the over 40s, including peri menopausal and menopausal women

Helping breast cancer patients to navigate post operative and long term management. When not treating patients, Clare loves to run, enjoys her weekly yoga and all the outdoor joys Jersey life has to offer.

Continuing with our theme of easy health related health tips, we wanted to talk about toxins...

In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, our bodies are constantly exposed to toxins.

From the food we eat, to the air we breathe.

Your body is amazing, but toxins can slow it down as they interfere with your body’s natural functions.

For example, they can overload your liver, cause inflammation, mess with your hormones, damage your gut health and even show up on your skin.

Eliminating or reducing toxin intake is one of the most effective steps towards better health and well-being.

Making conscious choices every day will help.

For example, go organic if you can, wash away those pesky pesticides, use glass freezer containers instead of plastic ones and finally be thoughtful about using cosmetic and personal care products that contain harmful chemicals.

A great app Charles uses is ‘Yuka’, which allows you to scan the barcode of any food or personal care product to find out if the ingredients are harmful or not and even suggests alternatives. Another app for your cosmetics is 'Think Dirty', which scores the brand based on the baddies it contains like silicones, sulfates and parabens.

Did you know that certain fruits and vegetables tend to have higher pesticide residues?

Continuing with our theme of easy food related health tips, we wanted to share with you the concept of the Dirty Dozen.

The UK Government monitors residue levels in food consumed in the UK, and each year PAN UK publishes the Dirty Dozen List.

This is the list of fruit and vegetables most likely to be contaminated with multiple pesticides – the so-called ‘pesticide cocktail’ :

Latest Dirty Dozen List:

1. Soft citrus (e.g. tangerines)
2. Oranges
3. Lemons
4. Grapes
5. Pears
6. Pulses (e.g. lentils)
7. Bread
8. Carrots
9. Spring Onions
10. Dried Beans
11. Peas

To avoid these pesticides, it's always best to buy organic, as this can help minimise your exposure to pesticides.

In Jersey, we are lucky to have numerous stores selling organic fruit and vegetables, such as the SCOOP The Sustainable Cooperative in St John's, Anneville Farm Shop and our local supermarkets.

But if you can't afford to buy organic, you can always wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly (e.g. with bicarbonate of soda!) to reduce pesticide residues.

Essentially, it's important to consume a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, regardless of whether they’re organic or not.

As we move closer to Summer, now is the perfect time to add some healthy habits to your routine.

Back in March, we shared Charles’ health reset, including his successful focus on his gut microbiome by consuming 30 different plants a week.

So, this month we thought we’d share a couple of his easy food-related health tips.

When cooking vegetables, do you ever take the time to wash away the pesky pesticides that lie dormant on your veg? Pesticides on our fruit and veg are a growing concern, and for good reason.

According to Professor Tim Spector, leading epidemiologist and co-founder of ZOE, nearly all of us have measurable levels of pesticides like glyphosate (a common herbicide) in our bodies.

He recommends choosing organic where possible, especially for foods like tomatoes, berries, and leafy greens that are often heavily sprayed.

While going fully organic isn’t always accessible or affordable, there is a practical way to reduce surface pesticide residues at home: a bicarbonate of soda soak. It's a simple trick that offers peace of mind straight from your kitchen cupboard. This method is approved by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and consumer safety groups like Which?

Here’s a simple, science-backed way to wash pesticides off your veg:

1. Mix 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda in a bowl with 500 ml of cold water.
2. Soak your fruit and veg for 12–15 minutes.
3. Drain (have a look at the colour of the water – yikes!), rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Don't forget to buy a good quality bicarbonate of soda that is aluminium free, for example the Wholefood Earth brand.

To mark National Chiropractic Week, we’re sharing 10 fascinating (and fun!) facts about chiropractic care, plus a few surprises about our founder, Charles Robottom.

Whether you’re a regular on the treatment table or just curious about what chiropractors actually do, there’s something for everyone in our latest blog.

Did you know Charles has been a chiropractor since 1990 and has specialised in SOT (Sacro Occipital Technique) for over 30 years?

SOT is a holistic approach that looks at how the body compensates for a variety of issues, using gentle, hands-on techniques to restore balance and wellbeing.

And here’s a fun throwback: when Charles opened Orchard Chiropractic in 1999, the world was bracing for Y2K chaos. Just like in that classic Simpsons episode - you remember it, don't you?

Thankfully, there was no apocalypse, but there’s been plenty of learning, laughter, and chiropractic care ever since.

Want to discover more quirky facts about chiro? (including the story of the Christmas lunch no one forgot)?
